NEW MUSIC some great soaring melody lines giving honest praise and worship to the God who saves.
“ Yes He Lives” was written by long-time Hillsong writer and leader, Hannah Hobbs. Previously released back in 2023, this powerful Easter anthem is filled with celebratory fervor that not only tells the triumphant story of the empty tomb, but also points the listener to the ultimate resurrection we have waiting for us at the end of days.
Musically and instrumentally,“ Fighting For Us” fits the old Hillsong model of a stadium rocker and while the idea is solid, lyrically this one falls flat for me. I love the female vocal on this track but they could have gone much deeper with their writing here, instead they chose to use over-used phrases and melodies.
The final track,“ Behold the Lamb of God” ends the EP and begins with a simple piano ballad as worship leader, Eric Liljero lends his powerful tenor to this song extoling the names of Jesus while reminding all of us that He is the only light that can overcome the darkness and sin of this world.
Even though I was expecting something a little more out of the box from Hillsong since they have been through so much these past few years, I wasn’ t totally disappointed in this EP. The writing fell short in a few areas, but I had to remind myself that simple is not necessarily bad, especially when writing for the local and global church. The church needs songs they can easily sing, feel and apply to their lives and when all is said and done and after everything they have been through as a community, Hillsong is still doing what they were called to do so many years ago, write songs for the church and they did that on this EP.
SHANE AND SHANE Song Spotlight“ My Portion”
Growing up in a very traditional Lutheran church gave me a soft spot for hymnody. Those timeless classics like“ How Great Thou Art”,“ Holy, Holy, Holy”,“ A Mighty Fortress” and“ Great Is Thy Faithfulness” among others, still ring in the hearts of God’ s people today and helped served as the building blocks of the modern worship movement. Many current worship artists have added their own updated versions of these classic songs with what we now call, the“ modern hymn”.
Over the past few years, worship artists Shane & Shane have really taken the modern hymn to new heights with their gorgeous melodies and straight from scripture approach to song writing. One of my personal favorites came out way back in 2023 and was included on their Songs, Hymns and Spiritual Songs album.
“ My Portion” is a beautifully crafted modern hymn that captures the heart of what it means to find contentment and joy in God alone. From the very first note, the song draws listeners into a posture of quiet reflection and gratitude, reminding us that no matter what we lack in this world, God Himself is our greatest treasure. The duo’ s signature harmonies shine throughout the track— rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced— creating a sound that feels both intimate and majestic.
Lyrically,“ My Portion” is simple yet deeply profound as Shane Barnard gently leads the listener through a journey of surrender and trust, acknowledging human weakness while lifting our gaze to the eternal sufficiency of Christ. In a culture that constantly tells us to chase after more,“ My Portion” points us instead toward
resting in God’ s unchanging goodness.
Musically, the arrangement is understated but purposeful. Acoustic guitar, cello and piano provide a warm foundation, while subtle percussion and atmospheric layers give the song depth without overshadowing the lyrics. The production feels worshipful and organic making it easy to imagine this song in both personal devotion and corporate worship settings.
The song’ s intensity slowly builds to the powerful bridge section which is taken directly from Psalm 73:26“ My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Barnard’ s voice soars into the rafters as the drums and guitar pound home what is the pinnacle moment of the song, and you cannot help but sing along at full throat.
Perhaps the most compelling aspect of“ My Portion” is the sincerity it conveys. Nothing feels forced or overly polished; rather, it feels like a genuine prayer set to music. Shane & Shane have long been known for combining theological richness with emotional authenticity, and this song is a perfect example of that balance.
“ My Portion” is a great modern hymn and a moving reminder that our ultimate satisfaction and security are found in God alone. It’ s a song that lingers in your spirit long after it ends, inviting you to rest in the truth that He truly is enough.
