this!” It feels so communal, and this is what I feel every night. I get to moments like that and think, I need this as much as anybody else. I don’ t feel like I’ m delivering a song to people at all. I feel like I’ m worshiping with people in that moment. And that’ s the thing for me, that has the longest impact. Anyway, that’ s been my takeaway from leading that song every night.
[ WM ] Thank you Pat. Well, so on a completely different subject, I personally came out of a time like your Dad of super groups. In the sixties, we had Cream and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. In the seventies, we had Weather Report, Return to Forever and the Souther / Hillman / Furay Band, and in the eighties, The Highwaymen and Traveling Wilburys. So tell me, what’ s the deal with Sons of Sunday? I absolutely love the track“ One More Day.”
[ Pat ]( laughs) Oh, I do too! Yeah. The Sons of Sunday has been the most surprising and meaningful and fun collaboration I’ ve ever been a part of. And there’ s already friendship and relationship there in songwriting. We’ ve written songs over the years, not necessarily all in the same room, but in different ways. And there’ s always songs that you’ re like,“ Oh, I know what to do with this one, and you put it out.”
Or,“ Okay, this guy’ s going to sing this one, and you put it out.”
But then there’ s a group of songs that was like,“ Where do these belong? These don’ t have a home.” And so, to give them a home in the way that they were written with the people they were written with. And to not just share the songs but also share a little bit or a lot of the relationship and the friendship that we have. A lot of just the history, not just writing songs, but kind of learning each other’ s lives a little bit and where these songs are coming from. Being able to share that side of it as well has been so fun. And I hope there are more on the way.
[ WM ] Very cool. So are you still using the same guitar of choice?
[ Pat ] My Gibson Hummingbird? Yes! The black Hummingbird. She’ s in there. That’ s the road dog right there.
[ WM ] Okay. Very cool. I think I’ m going to finish here with a question that I’ ve never asked before. With all label and publisher politics aside, what are the three best worship songs written in the past 10 years?
[ Pat ] Ooh, what a great question! Last 10 years, oh gosh, I got to do a year check. When did“ Goodness of God” come out? That’ s in the last 10 years. Yeah.“ Goodness of God” would be one of them for me. Oh,“ Holy Forever” would be one for me.
It’ s funny, I realize even in saying these out loud, I’ m choosing the songs that feel, they just feel like they don’ t belong to one person. They just belong to the church. Gosh, number three, I’ m just thinking I want to get this right. What do I want my third one to be? It’ s“ What a Beautiful Name.”
[ WM ] Well listen, God bless you and my prayers for safety are over you and your family and the tour. May God’ s touch be upon the new songs that you’ re bringing to the church. I really appreciate this time. I know your schedule’ s been tight and busy and you’ re on a little break right now. So, thank you so much. It’ s great to see you.
[ Pat ] Yeah. Thank you. So good to see you again.
