[ Pat ] What’ s behind it all. I want to say 40 years of life is behind it!( laughs) And a lot of these, especially that song,“ I’ ve Got a Fire”, and giving the album that song title. It’ s a song about not having moments with God. It’ s a song about longevity with God looking into the future with intention and purpose and about running. And not just running but finishing a race faithfully in a lot of ways, I don’ t know if I’ ve lived enough life to write this album yet, and it doesn’ t mean that the songs are complicated necessarily, but it does mean that there’ s experience behind it. And I mean, life experience, ups and downs, twists and turns that have for me led to be more simplistic in a lot of ways. But informed and trusting faith in that fire, not the fire of sometimes when you’ re like,“ Oh, if you have a fire, that just only means you’ re passionate and emotions are high”. That’ s not always what it means. It means that it’ s like Paul prayed it over. Timothy’ s a pretty fan into flame, the gift of God that was bestowed on you from laying on of hands. There’ s a participating and a participation that happens with God throughout the course of your life. And that means even on this album, it’ s like songs of celebration and thanksgiving. And there are some songs in there that pump the brakes on something that feels too naively optimistic because that’ s not faith either.
Faith has grit and it takes a punch, and it can handle hardship. And so, there’ s a song called“ The Wrestle” on there that echoed the Psalms. The Psalms gave me permission to be so honest with God, it made me nervous. What
Pat Barrett- The Wrestle do I do with the intensity of the feelings I feel? I mean, the ones that you’ re embarrassed to let anyone know about.
If anyone found your journal, you’ d sweat a little bit. That type of open dialogue with God, faith includes that. And instead of letting whatever those feelings are, create a wedge and distance, that song is like you bring it to God, let it foster communion and intimacy instead of distance. And so, part of“ The Wrestle” that says,“ I’ d rather walk with a limp than run from You.”
So, Jacob wrestles with God and he’ s marked by it for the rest of his life. I don’ t think it means you go through life just like always wounded, but you do go through life having fought some battles and you wear the result of them. And even that can be a display of faith. So yeah, so this album is like as you walk with God, you experience more life, you experience more
