technique of EQing the reverb to better place it within the mix .
INCREASING YOUR LIVE SOUND EQ IQ : AN EQUALIZATION PRIMER Did someone mention EQ ? This intro article should help get your head around just how to approach equalisation in your mix to place each element in its own sonic neighbourhood while avoiding particularly troublesome EQ tendencies which often pop up on certain instruments .
THE SEVEN SYSTEM DWARVES This might be a great companion piece to the reverb article cited above . How might we best map a given frequency range to its general descriptor in everyday language ? What is the difference between ‘ tubby ’ and ‘ muddy ’? How about ‘ barky ’ and ‘ edgy ’? Think of this one as a translation tool to get from the comments you ’ ll inevitably receive from the congregation and the specific EQ frequency ranges on the console .
There are many more technical articles in the archives of WM to check out , but these five are a great start if you need a refresher or would like to share with your volunteer crew . For those of you who are thinking of deploying audio networking like Dante or already have a Dante-enabled rig at your church , I ’ d also add this bonus technical primer : AUDINATE ’ S DANTE IN WORSHIP
As we shift gears a bit into more of the ‘ philosophical ’ articles in the dusty WM stacks , here are a few that I think relate particularly well to the specific needs of audio engineers in the worship space .
MIXING MUSICALLY : BECOMING PART OF THE MIX This is probably my favorite article in the collection . How do we move from a mindset in which we manage and design a mix that successfully delivers what the musicians intended to a mindset in which we are adding something special — more than the sum of its parts ? Learn how the Golden Ratio and a good understanding of song format and dynamics can make the difference and get us closer to that goal !
MIXING STOICALLY How much of our gig deals with technology and how much of it deals with psychology and philosophy ? Check out this article to find out why I think that without a focus on how we frame and relate to the inevitable hardships and tech gremlins and difficult interpersonal parts of our job description , we are likely doomed to failure . Can a more stoic approach to the bumps in the road help us heighten our chances of success ? I think so !
IMMERSIVE WORSHIP EXPERIENCES AND CHURCH TECHNOLOGY — A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE As I prepare for the upcoming Christian Musician Summit this week ( Nov 8-9 ), I have been reviewing this article from May 2022 . Originally presented at last year ’ s CMS to a packed room , I am ready to swing at the topic again with a few updates including new empirical research from my colleague Dr . Alaa Algargoosh around the emotional impacts of ‘ immersive ’ spaces .
This original article tracks the history of immersive spaces from early Greek and Roman architectural wonders up through modern sound systems and object-based mixing approaches . The heart of this article ( and Algargoosh ’ s research ) aims to get at why we should aim to include so-called ‘ immersive ’ elements in our mix as well as exploring just what ‘ immersive ’ really means . Hopefully just like my monthly reminder from Bruce to send over my WM article , the CMS event becomes a part of my usual routine ! I will circle back with my December 2024 article here with a summary of how the event turns out . Fun !
Thanks so much for tuning in each month and giving these articles a read . I also appreciate your wonderful comments and questions over on LinkedIn . Feel free to hit me up any time . Here ’ s to another five years and eight months of being lucky enough to share with you all . Now it ’ s time to make up another pot of coffee and get the recycling bin out !
