around console marketing and spec sheets piqued everyone ’ s interest . The session was a continuation of this Worship Musician article from Feb . 2021 .
I ’ ve written about marketing and ethics in other music industry magazines . The basic idea is that some marketers ( hopefully not me !) have been ‘ creative ’ in representing particular specifications about their mixers and audio gear to win spec sheet battles . If a marketer can say that they have 8 , 10 , or 12 more ‘ inputs ’ by getting tricky and counting effects returns as ‘ inputs ,’ should they ? This is a contentious point in the audio industry , and I am hopeful that a more rigorous standard for specifications can come about in the future .
We rounded up the session with the following tips for making sure that churches are getting the most effective match between their requirements and their selected console :
• Count discrete sources . Ask , ‘ How many microphones can I plug in at once ?’
• FX returns are not equal to inputs ( in most cases )
• Ask about whether all channels are ‘ full ’ channels with complete processing . If some subset of channels only offer limited effects or EQ or processing , check that out in advance and make sure that will work for you . Don ’ t get caught with limited channels ( noted in the fine print ) putting limits on your mix .
I look forward to seeing you all out on the road at a conference , summit or tradeshow in the future . Thanks to all the Christian Musician Summit attendees for the incredible engagement . I learned a lot from you all !
