Another great feature of the new Rally II is the chambered mahogany center-block and semi-hollow side wings , providing feedback resistance but also making this Gretsch lighter than many guitars of this style .
The Pearloid Neo-Classic thumbnail inlays are subtle on the Thin U-shaped mahogany neck with 22 frets . The controls are a bit different than most guitars of this style where you have a separate volume control for each pickup , a single tone control for both pickups , a master volume on the lower horn of the guitar and a three-way toggle pickup selector at the top . The single tone control works well in this configuration , and I didn ’ t miss having one for each individual pickup .
Many guitarists on the worship team and nonsecular music world tend to play more acoustic guitar than electric . But sometimes the song or band requires that added push from a semihollow body electric guitar with some fatter tone . Gretsch Guitars has revamped their
Electromatic Series and updated several of these instruments . Including the Gretsch G2604T Streamliner Rally II that WM received for review .
After the customary unboxing at the office the first visuals that grab you with this guitar are the racing stripes on the pickguard and truss rod cover . The radio style control knobs look stunning as do the vintage vibe Super HiLo ’ Tron Humbucker pickups and B70 Bigsby tremolo .
The original Gretsch Rally guitars weren ’ t available for very long and Gretsch brought this limited run instrument back in celebration of the brand ’ s 140 th Anniversary !
Machine head tuners on the Gretsch Rally II are enclosed and die cast . Aged white binding is featured on the top and back of the 16 ” double cutaway body . The Plexi pickguard and truss rod cover reflect matching stripes for continuity . The B70 Bigsby tremolo comes back in tune after use thanks to the anchored Adjusto-matic bridge and synthetic bone nut .
For a budget conscious Gretsch guitar the Rally II packs features that we ’ ve come to expect on instruments three times this cost . The Thin U neck is extremely comfortable for chording and soloing and not as chunky as many 335 style instruments can be .
Plugged in the twin HiLo ’ Tron pickups deliver more punch than vintage Gretsch models since these are humbuckers instead of single coil pickups making the Rally II more versatile .
Although it doesn ’ t include a case or gig bag the Gretsch Streamliner Rally II guitar is a great value at only $ 699.99 . The model WM tested featured the Oxblood finish , but it is also available in Bamboo Yellow with Copper
