WHAT MAKES A GREAT OPENING SONG ? | Mitch Bohannon
Have you ever asked for help finding a # 1 or opening song for your worship set ? I know that I ’ ve asked that question many times and have been asked many times for suggestions .
So , what are the requirements for a song that starts off your Sunday morning worship set ? A certain tempo ? Specific words or message ? A song that starts with chorus instead of verse ? Drum or certain instrumental intro ? I ’ ve heard many of these options offered up as “ requirements ,” like that it must have a tempo of 120 or higher , or welcoming-type words , or a hard-hitting downbeat .
Well , I would argue against most all such requirements . Granted , I would not suggest starting a Sunday morning worship service with a slowtempo song like “ Revelation Song …” maybe that would be a great song to start a scheduled night of worship ? Also , the old Michael Farren song , “ You ’ re Welcome Here ” is a fantastic song and would be great for a starter but using the word “ welcome ” is not a requirement !
I say the best song to start off a Sunday morning worship service is one that has captured your heart ! It needs to be a song that you ’ re excited about and that you absolutely know inside and out . Two months ago , I wrote an article about memorizing your music . I still watch services online and continually see people leading who are obviously staring at music and / or lyrics . If you don ’ t know the song , please put it off until you do .
A song that just grabs my attention each time I hear it is new from Gateway Worship , “ Praise the Lord .” It ’ s sung and written by Matthew Harris , son of my friend Mark Harris ( 4Him ). The tempo is at 104 , so it could never pass a 120 + test ! It ’ s got a great groove , the lyrics are understandable , encouraging , and inviting , and it ’ s easy to get a group clapping and involved . Remember , people must be taught and led to worship . They don ’ t simply worship because we start playing … Encourage them to clap or encourage them to raise their hands every time you sing “ Praise the Lord .” Instruct them on exactly how to get involved .
This song is powerful instrumentally as it ’ s recorded , but you can play it with just a guitar or a full band and still be effective . It ’ s recorded in the key of “ D ” ( full capo fret 5 | Short-Cut Capo fret 7 ) but that gets too high for me , so I ’ ve dropped a whole step to the key of “ C ” ( full capo fret 3 | Short-Cut capo fret 5 ).
Grab your guitar and Short-Cut Capo , warm up your strumming arm , and worship ! If you have questions , you can always email me at cutcapo @ gmail . com . Glad to send you my instruction handbook or chord diagrams to get you started .
