having some interesting ' ear candy ' patches spread out throughout the song really helped with the song ' s journey I felt . The piano we used for Oceans was a Yamaha C7 and I played the whole song with the soft pedal down . We even added additional mics underneath the piano as well to capture the softer warmer tone of the piano .
[ WM ] What are your " go-to " keyboards or plugins in the studio ?
[ Peter ] Omnisphere has been a big part of Hillsong United ’ s / Hillsong Worship ’ s and my sound over the years and I still find myself reaching for this plugin time and time again . I love it ! In more recent years I ’ ve loved sound designing on more analog synths as well like my Dave Smith OB6 and partnering that with my Strymon BigSky reverb pedal .
[ WM ] This all started in church , but over the years has made its way outside of the church walls as well . What is that experience like ?
[ Peter ] It ’ s funny because my musical sound designing journey started in the church for church but more recently I ’ ve started finding out that my sounds have made their way onto secular movies and TV programs as well like The Walking Dead , Good Girls , The Bachelor etc , which kinda makes me smile to be honest .
[ WM ] What advice would you give to someone who is starting out and interested in sound design ?
[ Peter ] Explore , enjoy , create and learn ! There are so many free resources out there via YouTube tutorials and blogs these days that just weren ’ t available when I started building my live computer rig . So , if you can keep your passion for music and creativity alive , the resources are literally right at your fingertips . Stay passionate , ask questions , be open to constructive criticism , and explore explore explore !
[ WM ] You ' ve made many of your signature sounds available on MultiTracks . com . Can you tell us a bit about what resourcing people around the world means to you ?
[ Peter ] I love that people can get a head start with their sound designing and patches via Multitracks and bypass some of the headaches I encountered being one of the first to start using a computer setup live at Hillsong Church . I love that people are able to start their journey strong with great sounds and great support from MultiTracks . I wish this kind of resource was available when I started ! So , don ’ t take it for granted .
