CAPO GUITAR
PAT BARRETT’ S“ BREAK OPEN” | Mitch Bohannon
Where and when do you worship? Seems like I’ m singing worship music all the time. I will even wake up multiple times in the night( I’ m over 50) singing the same song every time I wake up. I worship in the car. My wife, Noelle and I both worship in the car. Side Note: The Word of God tells us that the Father is seeking worshipers. I want to be found by Him, worshiping him … not just on Sunday!
Now to Pat Barrett. Noelle and I were driving to Lafayette, LA recently and she had been listening to the new Pat Barrett lately, so we put that on Spotify and worshiped together as we drove. I bet we looped the song,“ Break Open” four or five times during that hour drive. What a thought! He’ s better than I think, more than I imagined. I figure that over the years, I’ ve given more attention to the One who could DO exceedingly, abundantly more than I could ever ask or imagine( Ephesians 3:20) rather than the One who IS exceedingly, abundantly MORE than I could ever imagine. Do you hear the difference there. He is better than we think He is. Break open this box around my head, around my heart, You’ re better than I think. who is transitioning from the bass guitar to playing acoustic and he’ s using the Short-Cut capo to help the process. I had been explaining to him that these key of“ A” chords are some of my favorites to play with the Short-Cut. I love the fullness of the chord shapes and the progressions I’ m able to play.
Pay attention to the dynamics as you play and as you sing. Singing full voice or playing fullstrum during an intimate or reflective section of a song can be just as offensive as being out of tune. The first verse and chorus are very light. I’ ll play these finger-style to keep it soft. If you struggle with playing finger-style, I have a video on YouTube that teaches one way I approach it. It’ s important in worship to be able to play guitar in multiple styles. The second verse and chorus build into the bridge and the song finishes out big.

The song is so powerful, yet so simple to play. I sat and strummed along to find the song is recorded in“ Bb.” It’ s got just a standard, repeating four-chord progression with a cool little melodic hook in the intro and turnaround.
I wrote my chart in the Short-Cut Capo key of“ A,” so grab a 6-string capo and place it on fret 1 and the Short-Cut will sit on fret 3 to raise your key of“ A” chords up to“ Bb” so you can be able to play along with the recording. The key of“ Bb” for this song is a bit high for me, so I imagine that I will lead the song in the key of“ A.” That’ s what’ s wonderful about using a capo! You can easily find a key that fits your range best and use the same fingerings. I was just having a discussion with a guy in Florida
