KIDS WORSHIP
HAVE NOT ASK NOT | Yancy
A worship leader that I’ m coaching recently told me about a small children’ s choir they have with their worship team. This leader was concerned because 90 % of the group was girls. She was inquiring how to get boys to be involved. She was already aware that some of the kids of the adult leaders helping on the team weren’ t interested. I encouraged her to ask boys to be involved. I knew she had a few boys that had really been participating in worship well. They were fully engaged and using a variety of postures to give their worship. That’ s who I would start with. Because the whole purpose of having anyone on platform is to lead and model the kind of worship you want to see in others. They are there to not only create space for worship to happen but to set the example for others on what that would look like. Start the conversation with those kids.“ I love how you worship Jesus. Have you ever thought about joining us on worship team? I believe you could help us lead the other kids to worship Jesus through your example to your friends.” Watch for when that child gets picked up from class and introduce yourself to their parent or guardian. Let them know what you’ ve seen in their son and invite them to be a part of what you’ re doing.
I just walked this out with my own son. I haven’ t wanted to push music on my kids, so I’ ve been very intentional to not make them be a part of something musical. They’ ve both shown glimpses or had seasons where there was some interest in drums or guitar, but nothing has really clicked. However, my son Rhythm has gotten into music this year. Always grooving and dancing to the music and that has turned into singing along with everything. The songs he knows and even the ones he doesn’ t really know. He tries to sing along with EVERYTHING! His brother and I catch glimpses in the car and smile. About a week ago I asked him“ Have you ever thought about being on the worship team?” He pretty quickly said he was willing to try it. Over the last six months he has really hungered for church. He’ s been going early with me on the weeks I serve and even asking to go to multiple services on weeks I’ m not.
So, I reached out to our kids worship coordinator at church and it just so happened to work out that he got to try it out this past weekend. Literally one week later he held a mic in his hand for the first time. He clapped and jumped. He sang along and even extended his hands in worship. I was serving in the band on this particular day, so I got to watch it all. Rhythm went from“ I’ ll try it” to already ready to commit to the team after we were done with rehearsal. He hadn’ t even been a part of a service yet, but he was all in. Even asking if he could do it every week and wanting to be a part of some other places that kids are able to serve.
His small group leader told me that they were discussing spiritual gifts in the group and Rhythm said one of his was worship. He normally has had stage fright but being up there during the service, it just felt right. He knew it was where he was supposed to be.
I can confirm, my boys are pretty shy. They’ ve never been interested in a spotlight or being on stage. But, simply because I asked a question and planted a seed, my boy not only stepped into something new, but I believe stepped into new territory for how God can use him. He overcame any nerves or stage fright and felt at home filled with peace He was doing what God wanted him to do. Isn’ t that just like God? 2 Corinthians 12:9 says:“ My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”( NKJV)
As I watched this unfold, I was reminded that everybody needs other people around them extending invitations that help them step into their Kingdom assignments. Never underestimate the power of an invitation. Ask questions. Really see people and the potential that is in them. There are gifts and callings galore represented in your group. Just because they haven’ t sought you out to do the job doesn’ t mean they aren’ t called to it or that the people aren’ t there. Pray and ask God about who to invite to the team. Encourage them with your words and recruit them. You may be the person that God placed in their life to help them step into why they were created. Boys can and will worship God. I’ ve seen it over and over again. I truly believe we can encourage boys to be worshipers just like David was. The kind that are committed, uninhibited, awe-filled singers of praise. The kind who finds their delight in His presence. We don’ t have to imagine it, let’ s create that kind of atmosphere.
