Over the past decade, Singer-Songwriter, Jon Guerra has quietly become a well-respected member of the global worship community. Guerra will not get the radio play or notoriety of such artists as Elevation, Brandon Lake, Phil Wickham or Cory Asbury because Guerrea’ s sonic vibe differs from what too many production companies consider“ popular worship”, but his poetic writing, pop / folk undertones and flawless delivery are worth every worshiper’ s attention leaving no doubt that Jon Guerra is someone anointed by God to do what he does.
His fifth full-length album simply entitled, Jesus features twelve new tracks that are faith inspiring
and are rooted in strong scriptural foundation. These are song written with intentionality and forethought by a man whose faith runs deep and possesses a keen understanding of the Gospel and how it shapes his life. Jesus is not a quick album to listen to, rather it is a collection of thoughtful and intimate conversations between God’ s people and their creator. None of the songs here will jump out and floor you at first listen but instead will challenge you to listen deeply and maybe more than once and when you do, it will click and you will be moved by how God is stirring your heart through Guerra’ s music.
A few of the standout tracks include the aptly titled opener,“ In The Beginning Was Love” which features no percussion but fills the musical space with piano, violins, and tight harmonies as Guerra’ s airy tenor reminds us that our God and His love has been with us from the dawn of time, and it never changes. While the melody is not exactly Sunday-morning-easy-to-sing, this bouncy lullaby based on John’ s Gospel sets up the rest of the album perfectly.
The child-like“ Who Is Greatest” harken the listener back to a precious question that Jesus took the time to explain to His disciples. The use of glockenspiel, harps, piano and hand percussion make the track light and airy, but the message is thick with scriptural focus on just how much we are worth to the Father.
“ Gethsemane” is a dark, yet hopeful piano ballad with strings and electronic drums that shares what Jesus was feeling the night before His death while helping the listener to understand the“ why” of what He needed to do to save humanity. This track has a very theatrical quality and as I listened, I was instantly transported to that time as Jesus prayed for us and felt the weight of what He was about to endure.
To say Jesus is a deep and moving album would be an understatement. These songs are big and yet simple which is not easy to do. I would not say that these are songs that most worship teams could pull off nor are they songs with simple singable melodies just waiting to pop into your Sunday setlist, but with a little time, planning and intentionality, the songs of Jesus could be very powerful in the right spot with the right people.
