1920 ' s vintage drumset
recording retreats, writing retreats, and more.
But most of all, we want to invest into the families of the modern Levites. So much of our“ Music Industry” separates families— you tour away from your family, you record away from your family, etc … With Aevum Studio, we hope to build something that allows you to bring your family on the retreat with you. We’ ll be breaking ground this year on the new facility and hope to have it open in the autumn of 2026. We’ ll see what the Lord does!
[ WM ] Gabe, the last time I saw you was a few years ago in a parking lot along the 5 Freeway in Washington State. It was during Covid, and you were driving a moving truck full of your studio and other belongings. I sold you a vintage Roland Juno 60 synth and a 100-yearold vintage drumset with a huge kick drum and lots of percussive pieces. Have you been using those well in your studio?
[ Gabriel ] Ha! I remember! I’ m happy to say I use the Juno 60 on literally every project I produce. It’ s incredible and the one you sold me was in perfect working condition! Juno
60’ s have the best arpeggiator in the business— and the chorus is so wide. The pads are thick and lush. I use the buzzy sounds for guitar doubling a lot … There’ s just so much to the Juno 60’ s, they’ re definitely my desert island synth.
I can’ t say that I’ ve used the kit every day, but at least every month! It’ s such a rad kit! The dragon wood blocks are great— and the kick drum is used a lot for cinematic textures on the scores I’ ve been composing for Sight & Sound. Probably my fave is the wood snare! What a cool sound!
[ WM ] One more question. What advice do you have for worship teams to prepare for before they go in the studio and record with someone like you?
[ Gabriel ] I would say this: do not forget, the song is the most important part of the recording. Producers like me can make any song sound“ cool.” But if the lyric and melody are cliche and mediocre, then all you’ re gonna be left with is a cool sounding mediocre cliche song. And nobody wants that. Write honest songs.
Write about your history with the Lord. Write songs you’ re connecting with. Write songs your church is connecting with. Write your songs to move the Lord’ s heart. Once you have honest, connecting songs … the songs literally record themselves.
[ WM ] Regarding your studio and producing for folks – how do people get in touch with you?
[ Gabriel ] You can reach out to me through my website- www. gabrielwilson. com- or email me at Gabriel @ GabrielWilson. com- or Instagram @ GabrielWilson— I always love taking on new and interesting projects. Hit me up!
[ WM ] It is funny how we will go 5 or 10 years and not see each other, and then when we get together- it feels like no time was lost. Thank you for your friendship over the years.
[ Gabriel ] Right back at you, Bruce! Thanks for your steadfast friendship throughout the years. You’ re a good man, and a trusted friend! I love you brother!
