I was eating at the Anaheim Hilton in about 2005 with my good friend DeWayne Phillips . DeWayne had been the lead guitar player for George Jones , and I wanted to learn anything I could from him . The band was playing in the hotel foyer , and we were analyzing what they were playing .
That conversation is still a marker for me because I shifted from listening to notes and melody to listening to chord shapes . We could not see the stage and DeWayne was telling me what chords the guitar player was playing . At first , I thought he had perfect pitch and then I realized he was hearing the shape of the chord . Maybe that ’ s old hat to you … it is to me now , but in 2005 , it was a lightbulb moment . I was traveling with Kyser after developing the Short-Cut Capo and I was teaching it to folks who had never seen it .
So that really has become part of how I teach the Short-Cut Capo . Listen to the shapes . Place your Short-Cut on fret 2 and play A , D , E , F # m and then place a full capo on fret 5 and the Short- Cut on fret 7 and play E , A , B , C # m ( which are the same chords you played at first ) and listen to the difference in the chord shapes . When I heard the chorus of this song in the pre-release Instagram posts , I was immediately drawn to the song , and I was hearing the chord shapes and applying those to the Short-Cut Capo . The Fellowship Creative released this song right before Easter and it ’ s a great reflection on Christ ’ s sacrifice . Whether you want to play it light and reflective … fingerstyle or build it to a powerful full-band feel , it works either way .
