network switch , SuperRack SoundGrid software and a computer to host it , a Waves server to process the audio , and then finally … some plugins to use .
There truly are many , many options . If you know you ’ d like to get into Waves processing , I highly recommend contacting Waves directly to receive guidance for your specific situation because copying someone else ’ s setup is not necessarily the best choice . There are variables to consider . If you already have a system running Dante , there is a solution to connect to your Dante protocol . Are you also looking for a mixer upgrade ? Although I am a superfan of my Allen & Heath dLive , you could opt for the eMotion LV1 system like my son-in-law ’ s church did .
One of the main plugins we wanted to utilize for our situation is Waves Tune Real-Time for vocal pitch correction . If you ’ re running only a few channels and only want to add only want to add plugins here and there , it ’ s possible that you can process everything on your current computer and delay adding a server . In my situation , I need to process more than my Mac Mini can handle , so the Mac is only running the SuperRack SoundGrid software which points all the audio processing to my Waves Extreme-C Server .
Once I had the hardware and software powered up and sync ’ d together , patching could take place . For my situation , using the Waves card on my dLive , there is no patching needed inside the console I / O , I just had to direct it in and out it at the channel ’ s insert point . I have the Waves V2 card in my local port 4 . I assigned the patching inside of SuperRack SoundGrid oneto-one and then for each channel that I planned to process I simply assign the channel ’ s effects insert to point to SuperRack SoundGrid ’ s channels through port 4 . Honestly , looking at the signal flow , it seems simple . It was just an ordeal to get my head wrapped around it before I could finally get signal flowing .
Now that it ’ s connected and I ’ ve been using Waves for a few weeks , would I do it again ? Am I glad to have it ? Absolutely to both . I certainly wish I had understood quicker , but hopefully some of you out there can learn from my process and make solid decisions . I chose to start our first year with a subscription to Waves Essentials . This allows me access to many more plugins than I would have chosen cafeteria-style , and I can A / B different ideas on different channels . I can always purchase specific plugins that I learn about and choose to add .
Anything I ’ d do differently ? Not really . If you ’ re running a PC , I highly recommend buying a touch screen . I ’ ll be playing with ideas for adding a decent touch screen to my Mac Mini . If you know of one that works well … let me know ! cutcapo @ gmail . com
