Photo by Cynthia Reed on Unsplash the drums , the lead vocals , and everything else , while referencing a pretty fair amount of click track and section cues . The drummer ( who was also the bandleader ) was listening to everyone , his drums , section cues , etc ., but the everimportant click track was definitely the loudest sound in his headphones !
When we , as a band , realized that the click could skip at any moment , it became apparent to us all that a very startling event could occur at any time . The feeling we began experiencing was not much different than the anxiety that you feel while watching a scary movie , knowing that something really frightening is about to happen , but you don ’ t know exactly when because you ’ ve never seen it .
We took a break early that afternoon , and they were able to solve the problem by moving audio files into the same folder , blah blah blah … ( tech talk ). As we continued to run the show , there seemed to be a collective feeling of relief in the band .
Suddenly , there was more freedom of expression amongst the minstrels as we began taking individual chances here and there . Playful creativity seemed to be flowing between us all again , overtaking the dread that had previously loomed over us like a cloud as we wondered when the “ glitch in the Matrix ” would strike next .
After rehearsal , everyone made a statement similar to the fact that at some point , the sun shined in , and light filled the room once again when that threat of random attacks from the glitching “ opponent ” was lifted . I digress …
So you ask , “ How does this make me a better bassist ?” I share this with you as a friendly suggestion to share with the soundman who might require a lesson in empathy for the creative musicians in the worship team .
I can sum this all up by saying : Technical problems should be resolved before rehearsal . Technical problems can be distractions that dramatically affect musicians ’ creativity and their ability to pay attention to all that they must pay attention to . Also , a technical problem is nobody ’ s fault . It just needs to be taken care of .
If you have a sensitive sound person at your church , print this out and slide it under their door . Sign it , “ Love , your friendly worship team !” Then pray for grace and mercy !
