CAPO GUITAR
“ EVERY HOUR ” BY DAVID LEONARD AND JOSH BALDWIN | Mitch Bohannon
Oh , I ’ ve been a David Leonard fan from the early All Sons and Daughters days . He ’ s been an instructor at our Christian Musician Summit events , and I even had David with Leslie Jordan ( All Sons and Daughters ) come hang out at Summer NAMM several years back . Such a great writer ! And paired up with Josh Baldwin on this one is like a one-two punch .
This song is easy to learn … not too complex with lyrics and very memorable . This is the song you want your people humming in the grocery store or as they go about their day . The truth in lyric is one we all need to have fresh on all our minds .
The song is recorded in the key of “ G ” and is a perfect fit for the cut capo . Place a full capo on fret 3 and the cut capo on fret 5 and you ’ re ready to go . Too high ? Lower to 2 / 4 or 1 / 2 for capo positions … Too low ? Go up to 4 / 5 or 5 / 6 and play the same chart . In the video , I ’ m actually playing down ½ step ( full capo on 2 and cut capo on 4 ) which is the key of “ F #.”
The verses simply bounce back and forth between the “ G ” and the “ C ” chords , and the “ D ” comes in to connect phrases . The intro and the turnaround are just the same as the verse in their chord progressions . I love where the chorus moves from the “ G / B ” to the “ C .” This is such an easy and full-sounding movement with the cut capo … learn that too and you ’ ll be glad you did !
Speaking of … memorize your music ! I stress this point as often as I can . Songs that we play in worship are basically simple . Learn the verse . Learn the chorus . Learn the bridge … learn it all in sections and practice listening for changes . Musicians who rely on music disconnect themselves from the folks that the Lord has tasked them with leading in worship ! ( This is also for those not on the front line of the platform ) Even if you have an iPad on your stand for your in-ear mix . It serves as a visual barrier . Set it in rehearsal , move it off stage , and lead worship !
You ’ ll see and hear in the video , I used a “ hammer on ” going from the “ G ” to the “ C ” with the bass ( 6 th string ) just to add some extra movement while just instrumental . Also , you ’ ll see that often for the “ G / B ” I will only finger the

6 th string which is really a “ Gsus / B .” The beauty of playing with the cut capo is that you can often easily modify your chord fingerings and keep the chords big !
