A BEGINNER ’ S GUIDE TO VIBRATO : WHAT IT IS , HOW IT HELPS YOUR VOICE , AND EXERCISES FOR LEARNING HOW TO USE IT | Renee Maranan
Vibrato might seem like a bit of a mystery . Some can just naturally turn it on and off as they wish . Others spend years trying to cultivate it without success . And some others develop it through classical training , but then struggle to switch it off when they try to sing contemporary music .
Vocal science has come a long way in its understanding of vibrato , but there ’ s still some uncertainty as to how exactly it works . What we do know is that it ’ s an important part of healthy vocal function , and it ’ s a versatile tool for stylization and performance .
SO WHAT EXACTLY COUNTS AS VIBRATO ? Vibrato constitutes a fluctuation in frequency and amplitude in the vocal folds during phonation . This creates a slight wavering in pitch , usually up to 0.25 of a semitone above and below the pitch that you are singing , at a speed of about 5-8 cycles per second in healthy adult voices .
A slow vibrato is commonly called a wobble . This may be caused by a number of conditions , from vocal fatigue to tension , or even aging and hormonal changes .
When a vibrato is too fast , it may be called a bleat or tremolo . This is also brought on by a number of possible causes , such as overcompression , insufficient vocal fold thickness , or even performance anxiety .
WHY DO I NEED VIBRATO ? Singers sometimes think that vibrato only belongs in classical music , but it can be applied effectively in many other genres , including contemporary music . The exact application of vibrato will change from genre to genre , but when singers understand the stylistic and emotional requirements of their music , vibrato can be a powerful stylistic tool that they can use to elevate their vocal performance .
Functionally , vibrato can be a helpful tool for encouraging balanced singing . For singers who already know how to use vibrato , switching it on can trigger the physical responses needed for the voice to regain balanced coordination .
