occurring prime acoustic properties of Sower ’ s Cove in Caperneum which allowed Jesus to speak to thousands and be heard clearly without a sound system . From the perfect amphitheater design of the place with no protruding obstacles to the brilliant use of the boat a few meters out from shore which took advantage of the reflective property of water aided by just enough wind energy to carry His voice to the back without disruption , Dr . Stanley absorbed every detail .
Even though we were by this time running a bit late , he insisted I finish the narrative and I obliged . He thanked me and off we went into the service . It then struck me : I had given Dr . Stanley a Bible lesson ! Who was I to tell him anything ? However , I soon realized what makes Dr . Stanley so great is his humility and willingness to listen to anyone , even an audio engineer .
Another memory with a different ending took place on another Sunday morning during the sermon . Dr . Stanley had started out normally , but then stopped in mid-sentence and addressed the congregation . “ Do you all hear that ?” he queried . The audience shook their heads no and he shrugged it off and went back to preaching . A moment later , he stopped again and declared , “ I know I am hearing something .
Where ’ s my sound man ? Where ’ s Morris ?” Immediately , my heart raced as I knew what would come next . My ear monitor lit up with demands from the broadcast leadership as I made the “ walk of shame ” from the front of house booth to the stage . Once on-deck , Dr . Stanley looked at me and said , “ Do you hear that ?” “ No sir ” I answered truthfully . “ Well , you and I are going to stand here until you do .” And we did stand there for what seemed like an hour but was probably two minutes . Then I heard it : a distinctive noise the source of which I knew instantly . “ Now that you ’ ve heard it ” Dr . Stanley stated ,” What are you going to do about it ?”
I simply said , “ I ’ m going to fix it Dr . Stanley ” and I did . I reached down and unplugged the NL4 SpeakOn from each stage monitor and tucked the cable behind the cabinet . The noise was the distinctive sound of output capacitors going bad in a power amplifier and even though I had muted every output as normal , since the noise was generated after the console , I had no control of it from the booth . Once the cabling was disconnected , the noise ceased and Dr . Stanley looked and me and said , “ Alright , good . Now we can get back to the sermon .” The congregation gave me a standing ovation and my heart lifted as I realized I was still employed .
Dr . Charles Stanley was a complex , intriguing and talented individual who gave himself to ministry as few others have . He was intense , focused and did not abide fools well . But anyone who seeks to walk with God as he did must eschew frivolities and anything not aligned with that purpose . He was also gracious and humble , always the product of small-town Virginia and would kindly engage with anyone regardless of status , race or age . He was foremost and fully a servant of God .
Heaven is a little sweeter today , but Dr . Stanley , you will be missed here on Earth .
