Listen to Paul Baloche , Chris Tomlin , Hillsong , Elevation but also listen to Israel Houghton , Martha Munizzi , and Kirk Franklin and others . The idea is just to mix up your musical menu so you ’ re learning to play every style that ’ s out there .
Like learning to speak a language we first begin by emulating what we hear , then we become a communicator . Music is a language we must learn to communicate with , otherwise it ’ s lifeless . We have to work on a variety of musical styles to the point where they feel natural and relaxed .
Part of our skill as a communicator is learning to speak the language of those we serve . That ’ s why it ’ s so important to musically connect with the people we work with . Learning a lot of music and different styles prepares us better to speak whatever language is necessary to make the artist feel comfortable . I am purposefully using the metaphor of music being a language to make a point . It is the language of the soul that crosses every culture , nation , and tongue .
Through the years of working with so many artists and worship leaders I ’ ve learned to play drums and percussion in a variety of ways . I ’ ve “ spoken many languages ,” so to speak . That is the key : I never limit myself by only being able to play one way . As I said earlier , my ultimate goal is to serve each person to the best of my ability , and to make them feel their music is being played with excellence ; that I ’ m speaking their language . Hopefully as we play together in worship and make a sound “ as one ,” speaking the same language , the glory of God will come into our midst .
