to just forget good altogether .
Now , I am not saying that when we have a miss , it ’ s an abysmal failure . What I am saying is that because of the effort we put in and the gravity of what we ’ re presenting , it can certainly feel that way sometimes .
But think of Jonah . Sampson . David . Peter ! The cast of biblical characters is rife with people who are on fire for God , are extremely feisty , and made some pretty massive mistakes . But God continued to use them for glory . Mistakes are ok . Misses are ok . We learn from the mistake and take that knowledge into what we do in the future .
For if we don ’ t learn from our mistakes , are we not bound to keep repeating them ? Henry Ford said , “ The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing .” I tend to agree .
We ’ ve all read the verse :
He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion . I need to hear it again . He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion . I need to remind myself every day . He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion . Even when I try my best and fail . He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion . Even when I didn ’ t try my best and fail . He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion . He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion .
No caveats . No “ unless you mess up .” Every morning we wake up to “ new mercies ” because of God ’ s steadfast and faithful love for us . It will never cease .
To take resetting our vantage point one step further , I often think that if everything always went exactly as planned , life would be pretty boring . Our greatest triumphs come from overcoming difficulty . Our greatest stories come out of being in scenarios where things go wrong . That ’ s why they ’ re interesting !
So when it gets distressing , it ’ s a blessing ! Onward and upward you must press ! Til up from the ashes , Up from the ashes , Grow the roses of success .
There it is ! Right there . The words that have been bouncing around in my head since I was a kid watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on an old worn-out VHS . The words I heard in church and Sunday school my entire life . There is no mistake we can make that is too big to not learn from . If God so freely sees the best in us even when we fail , we can certainly extend that same courtesy to ourselves .
“ This I call to mind , and therefore I have hope : The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases ; His mercies never come to an end ; they are new every morning ; great is Your faithfulness .” - Lamentations 3:21-23
So next time you stumble , never grumble . Next time you ’ ll bumble even less . For up from the ashes grow the roses of success .
