I have to say , I was super disheartened by the Gallup poll at the end of March stating that for the first time since 1937 , church attendance has dropped below 50 % in the USA . Although , church attendance is not a factor in whether or not we are welcomed into Eternity with the Father , it does reflect our heart and values while we are still on Earth . James 2:14-19 clearly explains that our behaviors reflect our faith .
So , I guess I ’ m looking at church like a publicschool football coach understanding that it ’ s one thing to work with the team coming out of your locker room and it ’ s another thing to build a program . That would mean working with the junior high team and even having influence with the local recreation football league in order to build a program . It ’ s a way of building a “ farm team ”.
How does this relate to church attendance ? I think it ’ s important to create a “ farm team ” and energize the kids in the church . I believe that kids invite kids a lot more than adults invite adults to church . Jesus said to “ Let the children come unto Me .” ( Matt 9:14 ) I think adults have or end up making too many excuses about church attendance and a relationship with God .
When is the last time you grabbed your guitar and lead worship for a group of children ? I ’ ve written about teaching children to play guitar and also about leading worship for youth teams . Let ’ s drop that target age down a few notches and make worship exciting and energetic for the little ones Christ was talking about . It ’ s fine and dandy to use well-produced DVD ’ s of kids praise , but the kids don ’ t have a relationship with those people on the screen . They don ’ t see them at Walmart or the grocery store . They also don ’ t experience the personal care and concern that they receive from looking directly in your face or having you react to the story about their dog .
My wife and I have been loving spending time with our first grandchild these last few months . Right about the time I heard the results of the above-mentioned Gallup poll , my wife turned on a video for our granddaughter from Listener Kids . “ This Little Light of Mine .” That is simply the coolest arrangement of that song that I ’ ve ever heard and it ’ s the catalyst for this article … and little Hattie loves it !

For this song I ’ m just using a straight-8 drive ( all down-strum ). Add in some stops in the Bridge to accent the lyric … both the kids and you will be having a blast praising the Lord !
