It will help you to remember intervals by associating them with popular , simple , iconic bass lines or melodies . For example , the thematic bass line that starts the old 60 ’ s soul song ; “ My Girl ” is a perfect 5 th ( C-C , G-C-C ). Another example would be another 60 ’ s song called “ I Heard It Through the Grapevine .” The first 4 notes of the bass line in the intro outlines a minor 3 rd ( D , D-F , D ). The interval between the D and the F is the minor 3 rd . There are many more examples that you will find as they pertain to the kind of music that you listen to . ‘ Make sense ? If you didn ’ t know the language before , you know it now !
Another connection that I have found is that many people , particularly stringed instrumentalist , often see shapes in their fingering patterns and finger positions on the neck . For instance , if you play a C , E , G between the A string and the D string , you will most likely see an upside down triangle . If you add the A note on the G string ( second fret ) you will most likely see a trapezoid shape , or a " zigzag ”. Learning these shapes as you learn bass lines is essential to memorizing them . Understanding proper chord spelling and how it pertains to intervals will open up a relationship between shapes of chords on the neck and how you might play them differently / repeatedly .
From a spiritual aspect , a valuable tool for a bass player ( or any musician ) is the anointing . Have you ever heard or seen a musician playing their instrument ( s ) and you suddenly say to yourself , " Wow ! “ What is that ? Why do I feel this way when they play ?” It ’ s the anointing ! People who have this gift in their heart as they play often have this effect on the listener . I envision it as almost an “ oil ” that seems to permeate their hands ; an oil of gladness that is felt more than it is heard as they play . It adds another dimension to your playing that is way beyond skill and practice . How does one get this ? It is something you can only achieve through reading , studying , praying , and seeking the face of God . Blessings on the work ( oil ) of your hands !
