KIDS WORSHIP
HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE SHIFTED? | Yancy
I recently completed teaching a college course on Children’ s Worship that I teach annually. On what was the final assignment the students were writing about how their perspective had been shifted of the span of our weeks of learning. It really got me thinking about how, for all of us, our knowledge, awareness and revelation should be increasing as time passes. You shouldn’ t have exactly the same vision as you did when you started. You shouldn’ t only be using the same examples of worship as you did when you began. All living things grow. That includes us and our awareness of God’ s greatness and our understanding of why and how we worship Him. Can you testify of growth? Are you a plant that needs to be repotted?
I was sharing with someone parts of my story and how I got into making music and leading kids worship. I shared with them how my vision for it has only increased as I’ ve been on the track running my race. I didn’ t start with everything I needed to know, understand and have vision for. God has increased those things along the way, as I’ ve been in motion using my gifts to serve Him and be obedient. I’ m so thankful for the things I’ ve learned over the years. And I’ m just as thankful for the things God has been speaking to me and teaching me in this current season. It lets me know I’ m alive. God has ordained my steps. He speaks to me and guides in the path I’ m on as worship leader and as a worship shepherd to the team I oversee.
As I was reading the final papers from the group of students there were things many of them shared that excited me. They spoke of transformation. They confessed places they had misunderstood purpose and misguided what they perceived was the goal before. In many ways I rejoiced“ They got it!” Here’ s some of the things they shared and confessed that really excited and inspired me:
“ It is not performance. It is shepherding.”
“ True success is measured by spiritual formation, not noise level.”
“ I realized I was more comfortable with excitement than stillness.”
“ On Sunday mornings, I would primarily encourage the kids to go home and pray on their own, read their Bible, be kind to those around them, and ask God for help. Why did I never encourage them to go home and worship? Why was I so concerned about them goofing off during prayer, but not as concerned about them goofing off during worship? While I was aware of the importance of teaching children worship, I neglected to teach the importance of worship and the role that it plays in our relationship with God.”
“ As children are exposed to his presence, his peace and joy- just like how we may crave comfort food- they will crave the presence of God in difficult situations. I don’ t want children to just experience God in a classroom on a Sunday. I want them to be able to know they have access to the father at any time and any place and have the foundational skill to step into a place of worship.”
What did they just confess that resonated with your environment? What thing did they share that struck a chord with your current ministry and maybe even stung a little with conviction?
May I invite you into a season of growth? The kind of growth that comes with intentionally learning. Maybe it’ s a book you read or a series of sermons you study. You could invest time into a course you learn from. Shifting your perspective also comes from conversations with your team evaluating what you’ re doing. It may be hearing from others and allowing yourself to be challenged. I also want to remind you that it comes through prayer and seeking the face of God for what God wants to do right now. This spring. This summer. Start praying now for summer events like VBS and camp. What do you hear God saying? What is He highlighting to you, in echo from various people? Pay attention. I believe God is doing a new thing. And the cool part He does it all while being incomparably faithful and true to His character.
I’ m thankful how God has expanded my vision. He’ s increased my passion as I’ ve allowed Him to purify my heart. I want Him to download new revelation and understanding as I tether my Spirit to always be listening for His voice. It’ s time to open our eyes, gain perspective and vision for this beautiful thing that is discipling kids in worship.
