mention it’ s diatonic though, as far as our musical scale. It was the same but then again, the Greek music of the time would have been sung with the little semi-tones as well.
[ Chris ] Yeah, the semi-tones are really interesting.
[ WM ] John hinted in the film that it may have been actually kind of a pop version of what was pop music back then.
[ WM ] And they could have been singing it for quite a while before they even wrote it down and added notation to it.
[ Chris ] Exactly. We know this is the 200s, but it could be earlier than that. And think about that. And I don’ t know if John mentioned to you with some of the lyric, but one of the things that I felt the most compelling was the final lyric on this that was written. It says,“ To the only giver of all good gifts … Amen, Amen.” come and say,“ To the giver of all good gifts”, and that’ s how they’ d approach these pagan gods- to the giver of all good gifts. And it’ s just so beautiful that the last line of this little rebel group of Christians that were completely in the face of culture, that were completely opposite of culture, would say,“ To the only giver of all good gifts, Amen, Amen.” John said,“ That would’ ve been quite a statement to the culture that day.” And I love that. That’ s why in the song we really highlight that.
[ Chris ] Yes. That’ s what’ s so cool about it. It wasn’ t like when you think about, oh, this is from the 200s, it must sound like a Gregorian chant or some monks chanting. And he was like,“ No, this would’ ve been fairly popular.” That melody could have been a very popular little pub song or pop song. And they were putting this lyric to music a lot. It’ s funny, a lot like what we do today, which is really cool.
And that’ s a nice lyric. I mean, I could have written that, Ben could have written that, but the significance of it is so much more powerful because John gave us the background of what that would’ ve meant. And in those days in pagan worship, which would’ ve been most people to the Greek gods or he said, especially to Zeus, they would have any kind of worship. The worshipers would come and that was the call to worship would be they would always
[ WM ] I also like the line from the original lyric,“ To the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” There’ s the Trinity back then before the Nicene Creed in the year 325. So that was pretty amazing too.
[ Chris ] Crazy. Yeah. The first writing we see out of that, pretty cool.
[ WM ] So now you’ ve done“ Amazing Grace( My Chains are Gone)” and now the“ First
