KIDS WORSHIP
THE BEST IDEA I EVER HAD THAT WASN ’ T MY IDEA | Yancy
I ’ m a big believer in knowing your vision for the area of worship you lead . For me that ’ s kids ’ worship . So however you may have the age groups divided up in your ministry for each age range or set of classrooms , what is your vision for worship in that area ? It ’ s important to determine that , define it and communicate it .
I love the power of communicating your vision to those assisting you in leading worship for these various ages . Communicating your vision to them helps them know what they are there to do . They can help you accomplish your vision when they first know what it is . Any of us need to be aware of the vision in order to accomplish the vision with the way we intro and outro songs . The things we share to segway between songs . The teachable moments that need to happen to bring revelation knowledge and understanding to your group at an ageappropriate level . Communicating the vision to the team is a crucial step in seeing it come to pass . This also allows you the authority to follow-up , evaluate and coach them on an ongoing basis on how they are accomplishing the vision you had previously communicated .
A few months ago , I was coaching a kids worship leader . I had challenged her to sit down with her superior and talk through their vision . Then set aside time to dream about this and what it could be and what she felt God was showing her for the ministry area that she leads . She came back with a great idea . What if she articulated a vision for kids worship that she had the kids articulate and recite when it was time for worship in class ? Honestly , it ’ s not anything I had ever thought of but immediately saw where it could be valuable . It was an enthusiastic “ YES ” from me . The goal : come up with an easy to recite vision and call to worship . In the process of having kids recite it , they would be writing it on their spirit week after week . It would no longer be something assumed that the kids got but rather become a formational piece of repetition to encourage them to worship . Maybe a familiar word to use is mantra defined as “ a statement or slogan repeated frequently .”
Fast forward about six weeks and I was at a children ’ s ministry conference that had a session that was a demonstration of what kid ’ s church could be with all sorts of learning methods and elements to the service . The lady leading the worship time began that time having everyone repeat after her :
I ’ m made to worship . ( I ’ m made to worship .)
I ’ m focused to worship . ( I ’ m focused to worship .)
I ’ m ready to worship . ( I ’ m ready to worship .)
Now let ’ s worship ! ( Jesus )
My curiosity was intrigued when I realized what she was doing . I ’ m a big believer in the power of repetition . I can see where this could be so helpful in transitioning with more than “ Now , it ’ s time for us to sing .” Honestly , that ’ s not very inspirational . There ’ s a reason why that ’ s not working .
Here ’ s a few ways I see you could do this . You could start with one or two statements in the preschool area and build upon that adding a few more in elementary and so on . Or , you could have a completely different version from one age group to the next . Preschool , Elementary ,
Preteen , etc . I think your vision for these areas will determine which way would work better .
Based on a prayer I heard a leader pray over the students at my church , I would want to the add the phrase “ I ’ m confident to worship ”. I think that is huge for this generation . So , here ’ s another idea of phrases you could recite :
God made me to worship . ( God made me to worship .)
I will choose to sing in worship today . ( I will choose to sing in worship today .)
I am confident and ready to worship . ( I am confident and ready to worship .)
Jesus is worthy of my praise . ( Jesus is worthy of my praise .)
One of the ways I think you should lead is by teaching a nugget of “ who , what , why , where , when and how ” of worship each week . I can see where the four statements above reinforce that . Over those four lines you have : WHO , WHAT , WHEN and WHY . So now go dream of what this could look like for the group you lead in worship .
