EASTER OVERLOAD ? HOW TO SURVIVE THE “ SUPER BOWL ” OF SUNDAYS WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND | Matt Miller

AH , EASTER SUNDAY .
Dads who haven ’ t worn a tie since last Easter suddenly look like they ’ re heading to a job interview . Moms put on their best spring dress , and if the kids are under a certain age , they all match — because nothing says “ Christ is risen ” like three toddlers in identical seersucker suits .
The church is decked out : a cross draped in white , banners shouting “ He Is Risen Indeed ,” and , of course , an army of white lilies in those shiny purple foil pots — because nothing enhances a worship experience like floralinduced migraines .
And then there ’ s the crowd . The sanctuary swells with people we haven ’ t seen since Christmas , plus a few that might have just wandered in looking for free coffee . And for some reason , this is the Sunday everyone suddenly remembers that church exists — right before heading home for a ham dinner .
So , what do we do ? We go all in .
Extra rehearsals . A dramatic production . A video that took 37 hours to edit . A cantata ( which no one actually understands , but hey , we do it anyway ).
Why ? Because I heard someone in a meeting sum it up perfectly : “ Easter is our Super Bowl .”
It ’ s The Big One . The Sunday where we pull out all the stops to reach the lost and reignite the stragglers . And by the time it ’ s over , our budgets are maxed out , our volunteers look like extras from The Walking Dead , and the worship leader finally gets to remember what their family looks like .
But … is this the best way to do things ?
ARE WE PUTTING TOO MANY EGGS IN THIS ONE BASKET ? Now , before you throw your choir robes at me , let me be clear :
• The resurrection ? It ’ s a big deal .
• The biggest deal .
• But does that mean we should be making this much of Easter Sunday ?
WHY WE GO OVER THE TOP To be fair , there are two solid reasons why Easter gets the full Hollywood treatment :
It ’ s the grand finale of the Christian calendar . For centuries , believers have gathered on the first Sunday after the first full moon of the vernal equinox ( who came up with that system ?) to celebrate the risen Christ . It feels like too big an opportunity to waste . People who haven ’ t set foot in a church since last Easter suddenly walk in and give us 60 – 90 minutes of their attention . Why wouldn ’ t we go all out ?
