transitions , other seasons , and of course I did , but I ’ ve never needed faith for anything like I ’ ve needed faith for this .
[ WM ] Yes . There was a pastor that I sat under many years ago , he used to say , “ Faith is spelled R . I . S . K .” Risk is a big word . I teach two courses for Dallas Baptist University . One of them is musicians and entrepreneurship . And those two words put together sound like an oxymoron , but they ’ re not . Because entrepreneurs must be creative , and musicians are creative . But there are also a lot of other parallels between musicians and entrepreneurs . To be an entrepreneur , you must be able to risk . And so , you sized up that situation up correctly in the scenario you were facing , staying or leaving . So , I ’ m amazed at what kind of marketing went into launching this church with thousands of people going to it . Did the building already exist ? How did you know what size of venue to start with ? What about the lights , the production , all of that ?
[ Tauren ] Yeah . Well , it ’ s a whole lot of hustle and a lot of strategic relationships that God had allowed us to form leading up to this moment .
And that ’ s been one of my takeaways from the whole thing . Just kind of backing up from your question just for a moment , you never know how God is going to use a relationship that you might look past currently , but God really wants to use in your future .
I think that the gift that God gave us was time . And a lot of us , you ’ ve talked about creatives , entrepreneurs , musicians , people with a drive , with an ambition in our lives . We really want to see things happen quickly , not slowly . We want them to happen yesterday , not tomorrow . And the gift of God is actually that process that He gave us of seed time harvest .
Something has to plant , something has to die , something has to matriculate into the soil of our lives and that God gives us time to bring us into immeasurably more than we could think or imagine . And so , I go back to my years in my band Royal Tailor . One of the very first things that we did early on in our music career after we got signed was go play a Mother ’ s Day brunch for a church in Sacramento , California . And we were still in the 15-passenger van mode . So , we made our way out there driving to California and we met this guy , Demetri Wells , who was one of the musicians at the church who was our host for that weekend . Well , that was in 2011 , and you fast forward to 2023 and throughout that relationship from 2011 , we stayed in touch . We were friends , and when I told him that we were thinking about going to planting a church , something resonated in his heart toward it . And he ( and wife ) became our worship pastor . And our children ’ s pastor moved their two kids to Austin . And that story repeats . People moved from Illinois , from Florida , and from Tennessee .
Some long time connections and friendships that God allowed us to make did not seem strategic in the moment . But God had a strategy long term for them . So , when you say how does this happen , I would say it ’ s the culmination of a lot of almost accidental obedience along the way of just saying yes to God and allowing all of it to come together . It ’ s doing my first tour with a company called Transparent Productions , who is now one of the biggest touring companies in America , if not the world . And it started with them promoting my tour when their company was getting started , and we were just putting 500 people a night into rooms for my shows .
