SOUND CHECK
SITTING OUT THIS EASTER
No , it ’ s not as bad as it sounds . I haven ’ t forsaken celebrating the risen Christ . Rejoicing in the fact that Jesus has been raised to life is an amazing thing to do , and we would benefit from that knowledge all year round .
I mean as a worship musician … I need to sit out this year . I usually get the opportunity to play bass a few weekends a month when my schedule allows , and I like to try to contribute when I can .
At this moment I am the only bass player on the team , so when I am not there my worship leader carries the bass more with his left hand on the keyboard . But that limits him some . As good as the NORD sounds , when I am there playing bass , that frees up his left hand and he can offer more from the keyboard ’ s voicings .
This year I have family obligations , so I can attend the service time only , and not the early rehearsal time . For our worship team you really need to be at rehearsal , incase anything in the song set needs to be re-arranged and to keep the presentation the best it can be . To add to this for the Easter service we are having a small choir , so there are more moving parts than usual .
So , I will be in the congregation worshipping along with others and I just need to focus on that , and not thinking how nice it might sound with a bass line or two in the mix .
It would be good if we had a second bass player on the team . I need to start asking the Lord to send one . Some of you might chime in , “ Just use a bass track ”. Well , at this point we are not the kind of worship team that can simply add bass with tracks either as we are not on a click track . Oh well .
And then again , maybe this Easter I will be right where I am supposed to be . Judy does like it when I am worshipping standing next to her , so that will be a plus .
You may have felt some of these same feelings as a worship leader or worship team member . I do want the best for my church and Easter is an important holiday – right up there with Christmas . But sometimes you just need to sit one out .
