did some surgery on it . And honestly , the verses to me are some of the most powerful moments in the song . But it ’ s just a cool story because so many people ask us about songwriting and the process of introducing songs to church . So be super open-handed about it because you don ’ t know what songs are going to connect with people . And that was one that took us by surprise and we had to continue to refine it over time .
[ WM ] As songwriters , you really do need to check your ego at the door . I suppose it ’ s a lot like filmmaking . There ’ s an awful lot of film left on the cutting room floor before you ever see the final product onscreen . One of the things that I love about your music is that despite the main campus being located in Hollywood , AKA Tinseltown , you shun the superficially glamorous as the name Tinseltown implies . Scripture tells us that the devil took Jesus to the top of a mountain and showed him the kingdoms of the world and their glory . But Jesus saw through all of that . But beyond the splendor revealed , Jesus saw sin . He saw poverty . He saw sickness . He saw murder . He saw deception . Jesus saw what the devil did not show him . What do you say ?
[ Aaron ] I think a lot of us have had different experiences with success in music . At the end of the day , it kind of like how “ Everything At Your Feet ” says , “ I ’ ve come to the end of myself ”. There ’ s only so many things that we can do on our own . And thinking in the context of our community , our church , and worshiping together , it ’ s like a lot of how we ’ ve built it is just from putting people ’ s character over the talent . There ’ s a lot of talent that comes in through the door search , but we care first about the heart of those people . A lot of them do get involved at some point . We have some really talented people on the team , but it begins from a place of where we really care about our city and the people in our city , and as they come in and connect to us and then become a part of the community , it ’ s a pretty magical thing . And there are , like I said , some successful people , but it ’ s really like we care about what ’ s going on inside with you and how can we be there for you ? And then they start to open up to that and begin pouring in and contributing in their own way . And it ’ s kind of , I think a special environment that I think has just been cultivated by Pastor Erwin for so many decades now . It ’ s really cool to be on this side of it .
[ WM ] Oh , that ’ s good and it kind of leads into what I was going to ask you next . So much of what ’ s happening in the church all around involves bundling Jesus , like a utility or an insurance company bundles your plans with other things . But Jesus shouldn ’ t be bundled alongside politics or personalities or with anything or anyone . How do you as a team keep your focus pure and on Jesus only in unity and with eyes upon the kingdom of God ? Any thoughts on this ?
