REIMAGINED WORSHIP – A TIP OF THE HAT TO PAUL BALOCHE | Mitch Bohannon
Paul Baloche just dropped his 15 th anniversary reimagined release of his record , A Greater Song . I recall the day the original came out fifteen years ago right before we held the second Christian Musician Summit at Bayside Church in Sacramento , CA . What a great project it was then , and the new release is both fresh and refreshing .
How many Paul Baloche songs have you lead over the years ? Seems countless for me . His influence on my worship leading was deep and lasting . Whether you ’ ve lead dozens of his songs in the past or you ’ re just now being introduced to his music … I would argue that these tunes need not be put aside or forgotten and reimagining them is a great way to approach them . If we can still lead our churches with “ Nothing But The Blood ”, “ God is So Good ”, and “ Because He Lives ”, I would encourage us all to look again at songs like ‘ Your Name ”, “ I Will Boast ”, and “ Hosanna ”.
So , what does reimagining look like ? I would encourage you first to look at what translates well with the people you lead . You can easily change the arrangement to fit the talent of your team . Do you envision adding a mandolin or fiddle ? Would your approach lean toward an electric guitar playing with more grit or simple swells ? What about the tempo … would it feel better for you if it were faster or slower ? More cowbell ?
For this article , let ’ s look at one of my favorites from this record , “ Your Name ”. The song was recorded in Bb and most of the times I saw Paul lead it , he would place a full capo on fret 3 and played using “ G ” shapes . I ’ ll most often lead the song in the key of “ A ” using the cut capo on the 2 nd fret . ( If you want to play in Bb , use this same chart and place a full capo on fret 1 and the cut capo on fret 3 ). while highlighting the bass movement ( in the key of “ A ”) from the “ C #” to the “ D ” during the intro , verses , and interlude . I really don ’ t like to stay just playing fingerstyle because I really want folks to sing out … so adding more power and rhythm to build the dynamic up is helpful .
