important than personal musical fulfillment .
Why does all this matter ? Without intentional dynamics , the music won ' t serve the lyrics . And the congregation will feel an incongruity between what they ' re singing and how they ' re singing it . ( Translation : it ’ s distracting .)
3 . LISTEN TO AND COMPLEMENT THE OTHER MUSICIANS ON THE PLATFORM . I once asked an " all ten fingers all the time " keyboard player to play some simple two-note chords with a Hammond organ patch on a song . When we finished , I said , " That sounded fantastic , didn ' t it ?"
" Well , it sounded good , but I was really bored ." By Sunday , she was back to stepping all over the entire band .
Here ' s the thing : that keyboard player always came in prepared . So , for her , ' practicing enough ' wasn ' t the issue .
The real issue was my leadership . At that point in my journey , I hadn ' t figured out that it was my job to teach my team to play purposeful parts . And not only did I need to teach them about purposeful parts , I also had to help them figure out what those parts were on any given song . That is , until they understood it enough to recognize the part on their own .
Without purposeful parts , practice will never be enough . So , before you tell your team to practice more , make sure they know what to practice and why that part matters to the song .
