[ Jad ] “ Oceans ” for us was a real surprise , because when we recorded it , we kind of didn ’ t know where it would sit in the album or how it would be received . I do remember that the first time Tara came in was to sing “ Oceans ” in the studio , and she ’ d never done anything with us before . We thought , “ Oh , this will be cool ”. But when she sang the song a couple times it was like , “ Wow she ’ s just made the song different . It ’ s a different song now ”. That was kind of the beginning of that journey . The response worldwide has been significant . We never saw that coming .
I do love the fact that people resonate with the tension of stepping out of the boat , taking the step of faith and trusting in God . I think it ’ s a really cool picture for all of the church across the board , just the tension of stepping out and trusting God . It ’ s always been a song that people have resonated with , so when they hear that cello at the very beginning of the intro it feels like everybody ’ s been waiting for this song . The thing about it is that this song is from three albums ago , and so we ’ ve played it on the last three album ’ s worth of touring and it had become predictable as the closing song . We had this other song “ Good Grace ” which we wanted to seal the evening with , so we kind of arranged it like that , and I think “ Good Grace ” works at the end really well .
[ WM ] No one would have imagined a worldwide pandemic just 6 months after this event . My understanding is that much of New York City is in shambles . It has changed significantly since Hillsong United was there . My hope is that those New Yorkers in attendance that night , were impacted and carry some “ residual ” effect from that night , worshiping in the midst of Covid19 .
