CAPO GUITAR
THROWBACK WORSHIP –“ YOU ARE MY KING”( BILLY FOOTE) | Mitch Bohannon
This month, we’ re throwing it back 30 years. Can you believe this song is thirty years old? If you’ re like me, you lead it / played it almost every other weekend and then it slowly got bumped down the list until it just quit making it into the rotation.
There’ s nothing wrong with that. Life is full of seasons, and this song had a wonderful, long season. It made its way from the youth services to the main service and then to Christian radio.
When Chris Tomlin dropped his“ The King is Still the King” record, it was so refreshing to hear“ You Are My King” once again. We were preparing“ The King is Still the King” for our Christmas service and I was excitedly telling my worship team about the record, and I began strumming through this song. The team was like,“ Let’ s do that song this weekend!”
The E / G # is a wonderfully, easy chord shape to play with the Short-Cut … holding down the standard“ E-shape” with your 2nd finger on the 3rd string( 2 frets above the capo) and then grab the 6th string with your thumb in the same fret. There it is,“ E / G #.”
Remember, transposing with the Short-Cut just takes a 6-string capo placed two frets before the Short-Cut and for the key of“ E” you’ ll read it like an“ E-root” barre chord. So, placing a full capo on fret 1 and the Short-Cut on fret 3 gives
E / G # A B E you the key of“ F.” That comes in handy if have a vocalist that’ s more comfortable in a higher key or if you’ re wanting to connect two songs together.
I think it’ s time that a new generation worships the Lord with this song! Grab your guitar and a Short-Cut Capo and let’ s sing to the King.
Mitch Bohannon Mitch Bohannon and his wife, Noelle have been married for over 33 years with three adult kids and 6 grandchildren! Mitch developed the Short-Cut capo for Kyser and leads worship at Trinity Baptist in Orange, TX and is an English teacher in Louisiana.
I post songs almost every day as I’ m teaching the Short-Cut Capo and I used this song right after telling my worship team about it and that post got more response and activity than most of my posts. This is just one of those Home- Run songs that’ s easy to play, easy to lead, and easy for the congregation to connect with. Gotta remember, we don’ t need to lead songs because they are fun or feel good, but those that help us and others connect with the Living God.
Because this song is so familiar, you could simply lead it like you learned it 20-30 years ago, or feel free to change it up. Try playing finger style the first time through verse and chorus before you drive it up dynamically. You could do the same thing through the bridge. Usually, we’ d play the bridge two or three times before driving back into a big chorus.
The song is originally in the key of“ E,” which is a perfect key for the Short-Cut Capo. This simple chart only has three chords … no minors!
