NEW MUSIC
RED ROCKS WORSHIP The King Is Coming there. Songs like the opener,“ Ancient Love” and“ Heart’ s Delight” are inspiring declarations of God’ s faithfulness that are both poetically written yet vocally accessible in their melodic form making them easy to sing and remember.
McMillan does a masterful job working in everyday themes like shame, doubt and uncertainty while always pointing the listener to the hope that we have in Jesus. These themes come out well in songs like“ Born from Love” and“ Easy Burden” and both are delivered with a quiet confidence by his smooth baritone.
“ Holy Powers” is classic MacMillan with it’ s simple piano and slide guitars as John passionately sings about his personal experiences about how God continues to fill his empty heart day by day. The country vibe of this tune gives it warmth and feeling.
John Mark McMillan isn’ t big modern anthem worship rock. His voice reminds me of Johnny Cash at times and his songs aren’ t complicated. He is a blue-collar worship artist who goes deep with his writing. McMillan brings out the meat of the Gospel through his music and serves it on a plate for all to enjoy. Some of the melodies here were a bit dry for me but the lyrical content and focus of this album makes for some good congregational moments and personal times of worship.

Denver based worship collective, Red Rocks Worship has steadily been climbing the worship popularity mountain over the past few years with their modern and palatable sound. Their well-crafted songs resonate with different generations as well as people at different points in their spiritual journey. Their latest fulllength worship album, The King Is Coming is a declarative call to the Body of Christ to not just sing and believe, but to also receive the grace and love of Jesus and live a life of response to that love.
The King Is Coming is meant to encourage the believer in the midst of their current struggles by reminding them of God’ s mercy and love in songs like“ Only By The Blood” and“ Sound Mind( Receive Joy) while at the same time pointing believers to the triumphant return of
Jesus in songs like“ Wait For You” and“ The King Is Coming”.
“ Up To Something” is a driving anthem that wraps up the album with a hopeful reminder that God never stops working, even when we don’ t see it. We live in the midst of a Savior that is all powerful and is moving among us while using us to reveal His kingdom every moment. This message of daily hope is essential for every worshiper who experiences the highs and lows of life.
“ I See The Lord” borrows its lyric directly from Isaiah 6 as we hear about Isaiah’ s prophetic vision about the return of Jesus which fueled Isaiah’ s call to prophetic ministry. Soaring vocals and a simple melody line floating over rhythmic drums, pads and ethereal guitar give this vertical praise song lots of space and permission to sit back, lift your hands and sing along to the Lord of hosts.
I was impressed with the strong scriptural content of many of these songs and how artfully crafted the arrangements are here. Red Rocks did a great job of making the complex seem simple and accessible for the average pew sitter. The melodies are memorable for the most part, the production is not overdone and theologically, the album is very solid. There are some great songs here that will encourage, inspire and remind you to keep your eyes focused on the One who is establishing His kingdom and will soon return to take us home.
