into that write that day with this interesting contrasting thought of wanting to write a song that enthroned Him as King of Glory, but I also wanted to figure out if we could actually start the song by mentioning His meekness and his lowliness.
I wanted to try to write a song that had both extremes because He is both. He is the King of Kings, the King of Glory. He is the Lion, and he is the Lamb that was full of so much authority and confidence that he was willing to have his body slain into a grave because He knew He would just inhabit wherever His body went.
I wanted to write a song that thanked Him for that, that crowned Him, and that had no mention of us. When I sing“ The Lamb Slain”, I’ m only singing it for Him.

That’ s just wonderful stuff. Well, so with everyone so spread out, how did you approach recording?
Did everybody fly in into one, central place or were the basics just submitted digitally … how did all that work?
[ Lindsey ] Well, we did two nights of worship in San Diego. One of them was in August.
I wasn’ t at that one. I commute to California quite often. It’ s like my second home, for sure. And then we recorded some at our Jesus Culture Conference in September. I know that that’ s where we did“ None Like You”,“ Never Change”, and“ Presence of the Lord” was in Sacramento.
And then we did one final recording night in October, which was myself, the Torwalts, Zoe, and Canaan.
[ WM ] And how about post-production?
[ Brett ]
Yeah, I can speak to that a little bit. This record is completely done in house, with the exception of both mixing and mastering. So, one thing that we felt was important was that as we’ re stepping into this next chapter of Jesus Culture was that instead of trying to write songs for a project or build our production process that leads up to one large event … The metaphor I use is that we’ re trying to get the microphones in the way of what is already happening.
So, we’ re trying to remove as much of the fakeness of a live record, and we’ re trying to get as much of that out of the way as possible. There are songs on this record with no vocal overdubs.
There are songs on this record where everything you’ re hearing is real, with the exception of a couple of added textures and stuff. We wanted this to be an organic pure expression of what the Lord was doing right in front of us. We captured the songs in real local contexts. We found the bumps and bruises, and then we literally, I mean, there were some dubs that me and Lindsay did when we were writing in Nashville. For the most part, we’ re taking advantage of technology and we’ re just bringing it with us to emerge into our natural processes. It’ s been really fun!
[ WM ] Let me ask you one more question. What is your go to musical instrument? Is there a particular brand or model that you like?
[ Lindsey ] I think for both of us, it’ s probably the same one, right?
Probably just the acoustic guitar. And what’ s the most accessible and most I’ m proficient at.
I have a really old, beatup Martin that I play. And I love her. She’ s got a hole in the front, and her siding fell off.
[ Brett ] It’ s a vibe.
She’ s a vibe and just beautiful. For me, I think leading wise, I’ ve been really challenging myself to put the stuff down lately. I’ ve been breaking a lot of strings, and then when that happens, I put my guitar down, and then usually something really cool happens in the room after that.
And so, the ongoing joke is that I have people here at church praying that my strings will break. That being said, acoustic guitar is my favorite to lead on larger platforms.
I play acoustic a lot. I treat it a lot like a percussive instrument. I feel like as a worship leader, it’ s nice to be able to communicate.
You can literally build on an acoustic and people know what you’ re wanting to do or you can go into finger picking and people will know what you’ re wanting to do. For writing, it’ s piano or keyboard.
There’ s just something about finding melodies on that instrument that is just my favorite. So, I like both of those.
[ WM ]
Thank you, Lindsey. Thank you, Brett. It’ s delightful to visit with you both. May God impact the church and it’ s members’ lives through these new songs.
[ Brett & Lindsey ] Thank you! Thank you!
