5 WAYS TO PREP BEFORE PLAYING LIVE | Chris Rocha
After 35 plus years of playing guitar , I ’ ve gone through all kinds of phases and situations and have learned a thing or two about prepping before I go on stage . Beyond talent and skill , it ’ s often the habits and preparations that make all the difference . Here , I unveil the top 5 steps I practice before I take the stage and let myself be used by God .
1 . LEARN THE MATERIAL SO THAT I CAN UNLEASH MY UNIQUE SOUND : I believe that when a musician gets to a certain point , they start to develop their own unique sound and that has a great amount of value . The reason why so many musicians become successful is because their sound becomes popular , and people are drawn to it . If you ’ re using all of your creative energy just trying to play the right notes , you are holding yourself back from releasing your potential musically .
2 . WARM-UP ROUTINE : Before even touching the strings , you should engage in a thorough warm-up routine to loosen muscles and enhance dexterity . From finger exercises to scales and arpeggios , this ritual ensures that your fingers will be nimble and ready to deliver your full potential . When I tour , I have developed a warm-up routine system that works great for me . I either do my 20-minute warm up at soundcheck or as soon as I get to the venue for the concert . As soon as we pull up , I see everyone socializing and hanging out , but I go straight to a corner with my guitar and chop it out . I ’ ve come to realize that my warm-up routine is extremely important to my performance that night .
3 . SOUNDCHECK PRECISION : Soundcheck is more than just a formality for the pros . We use this time to fine-tune our tone , adjust levels , and ensure that every note resonates with clarity . Attention to detail during soundcheck sets the stage for excellence during the concert . It is important that we ’ re comfortable and can hear exactly what we need to hear to do our best . My mix is very important , so I need to make sure during soundcheck . I either adjust it myself or have the sound engineer give me what I need in my in-ear monitors , so that I can execute to my full potential that night . Feeling comfortable on stage is extremely important .
