Back in 2009 , I was working backstage at the Christian Musician Summit at Overlake Church in Redmond , Washinton , when I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Christy Nockels . She was about to begin her sound check with her band and happened to ask me for a bottle of water . What followed was an unexpected 10 min or so conversation about my work , my family and my passion for worship as I stood there and enjoyed a few special moments with one of the legendary female worship vocalists of our era . Christy Nockels loves God ’ s people and her heart for relational ministry is just as big as her love of music and I got to witness this firsthand . She has been connecting with and bringing people to the foot of Jesus with her powerhouse vocals , intimate and honest
writing style , and infectious love of worship for more than 15 years .
Her latest full-length live worship release , Captivate us ( Live From Keeper ’ s Branch ) is a beautiful collection of some of Nockels ’ greatest hits with some creative reworkings and lyrical additions to freshen them up .
The title track is a quieter , more intimate repainting of the original chart-topper , which was written and performed with her husband , Nathan during the “ Watermark ” years . Christy and Nathan ’ s voices shimmer and mix perfectly and are backed by a Rhodes piano and classical guitar . Even her daughter , Annie joins the family as the trio gloriously praise God for his faithfulness .
“ Knees to the Earth ” is another Watermark favorite featuring a chorus that will get stuck in your heart and also features an appropriate addition of the hymn , “ I Surrender All ”.
My favorite Nockels song , “ Waiting Here For You ” gets a quieter rewrite with fingerpicking guitars , violins and a soft upright piano , but the energy of the song is just as good as the original . Chris Tomlin jumps in on vocals during the 2 nd chorus and you can feel yourself transported back to the early days of the Passion movement .
Matt Maher joins Christy on the pensive and reflective , “ You Revive Me ” which extols the redemptive power of Christ in our lives . Maher ’ s gravelly tenor gives the song a gritty , raw feeling that when mixed with Nockels sweet , soaring vocals makes this song stand out .
Captivate Us ( Live From Keeper ’ s Branch ) is a hear-warming listening journey down memory lane as Nockels recounts highlights from her days as a part of Watermark , Passion and now as a solo artist . These are songs that have been sung in churches all over the world and many of them have stood the test of time being just as relevant now as they were where they were first released . My one little gripe would be that it would have been cool if she could have added a new song or two , but that ’ s just me being a fan and wanting new music from her . Christy Nockels is a gem of a person , and I am so thankful that God continues to use her heart and talent to announce and demonstrate the Gospel through her music around the globe .
