and you could have another team doing exactly the same thing .
But if the heart motive was different , then there would be a thoroughly different offering . And so , it ’ s actually hard to figure out sometimes . Sometimes someone will see a worship leader and think they ’ re showing off , actually they might not be . It might just be an explosion of enthusiasm and passion . They ’ ve almost forgotten about themselves , so wrapped up in the glory of God . So , it ’ s not an easy question to ask , but it ’ s an important one .
And at the end of the day , I think for every worship leader out there , it ’ s all about keeping your own side of the street clean . I don ’ t want to be pointing a finger at this person or that person or this expression or that expression or this ministry , or that ministry because actually I could point the finger at myself and just say , “ What can I learn ?” “ How can I grow ?” “ How can I keep my side of the street clean ?” And the question that the way I ’ m asking it these days , is how do we sing “ holy , holy , holy ” in a world of “ me , me , me ”. How do we make sure that , that eternal song that has been sung around the throne of God is absolutely holy , pure … sacred . How do we grab hold of that and sing that in our churches and in our day and age in a way that feels wonderfully Biblical and wholesome and God honoring ? Yes , it ’ s a big challenge for every worshiper .
[ WM ] That ’ s an honest answer . I like your advice “ to keep my side of the street clean ”. I ’ m going to put that into my daily life . That ’ s a keeper . I have another question for you . Years ago , I remember the terrible massacre at the music festival in Las Vegas and you went there just a couple of days after it happened , and you led a worship service . I remember how powerful that was . But now you ’ ve gone back to Las Vegas to do your new “ live ” album . Were any of those things connected or not ?
[ Matt ] Yes , I mean I think definitely my heart was knit with that city in a new way in that moment . We had already planned to have a tour night there , and then the shooting happened a few days before . One thought was to cancel what we were doing , but another thought was , “ Hey , why don ’ t we just totally reposition what we ’ re doing ?” So instead of it being a night of worship ( here comes Matt and his team rolling into town ) let ’ s make it more of a citywide night of worship and a prayer vigil all rolled into one .
And if people want their money back for tickets , they can have it . Whoever else shows up could show up for free , because this has become something altogether different . And it was actually a very profound and beautiful night . There were a lot of first responders there in the building . We had others who were online linking in from hospital rooms and victims and their families .
