the manufacturer , simply use a felt tip pen and mark the spot with either a dot or a line . If you can see the markings while playing , you know the seams are not striking the head .
THE TIE THAT BINDS Hand cymbal straps are attached to the plates with either a pouch-and-ball system or with a special knot . The cymbal knot method is still popular , but disaster is brewing if the knot starts to unravel . What would be worse than the cymbal falling off the strap during a performance ? Okay , the cymbal falling off the strap AND landing on your toe — that would be worse !
Learn to tie a cymbal knot . It ’ s simple ; a quick search of the internet will provide several sources . Before a performance , check the straps for wear and tighten the knot if it ’ s loose .
NO BAD VIBES Although the triangle is usually played as a handheld instrument , it is sometimes necessary to perform a passage with the instrument mounted on a music stand using a clip-style holder . Guard against any extraneous sound between the clip and the stand by placing a bit of padding between the holder and the stand . This video demonstrates how either a piece of cloth or a couple of felt washers can provide padding .
SUSPENSION SAFETY If the loop on the triangle holder snaps , the resulting clamor can be disruptive and downright embarrassing . That ’ s why the holder should be equipped with two loops so there is a backup if the main suspension loop breaks . When a loop fails , be sure to add a new one ASAP so double loops are ready for the next performance .
THIN BUT STRONG The previous paragraph emphasized the importance of two suspension loops for the triangle , but don ’ t overlook the loop material .
For example , using thick material such as a shoestring will inhibit vibrations ( shout out to middle school percussionists ). A strand of wire or a guitar string can cause a buzz in the tone . Equip your holder with loops that are both thin and strong . The holder from One Beat Better contains loops made of thin , braided 40-pound test fishing line while the triangle clip from Grover Pro Percussion features special nodal suspension loops .
Inattention to the little things can compromise your music-making . However , do not become so absorbed in the minutia that you lose the grand perspective on the piece of music . It takes a balance .
“ Okay , the German silver isn ’ t right . I ’ m going back to the dimpled brass .”
