so I just kind of stuck around Florida .
I met a couple of local worship artists and did a few small tours and things like that in Florida during that year . Then the next probably two to three years was really a lot of me and my now wife Jordan working on our relationship . She ’ s from Colorado and so when she finished school she wanted to move back home to Colorado and I was ready to go to Nashville . But I was like , “ I feel like that ’ s just not the right time ”. I don ’ t want to move to a city and try and start a new life while we ’ re dating and she ’ s living in another state . She ’ s a musician too , so I was like , “ I just need to get this locked down first and then maybe we can do Nashville together when the time is right .”
Then she moved back home to Colorado and I decided to move to Colorado too . I ’ d never been there , didn ’ t know anybody there , but I packed up my car , all my guitars , the four T-shirts I owned , and I drove out to Colorado . I lived out there for about a year and some change . We got engaged there , we got married out there and then we made the group decision to move to Nashville right after we got married . We moved into our first apartment in Nashville the first week of March in 2015 . And I really didn ’ t know a lot of people here .
I could count on one hand the connections that I really had and kept up . I really wasn ’ t nervous or scared about it . I just knew it was a big town and I was about to be a really small fish in a big town , and I wasn ’ t in a hurry to kind of jump in and get my name out there .
I ’ ve never really been that motivated of a connector . That ’ s just my personality , it is pretty slow moving ( laughing ). So , I just made connections pretty slow through the years and did lots of different things . I did a lot of country music when I first moved . That ’ s just kind of the first thing that was asked of me . And I definitely wasn ’ t a country guitar player . I had to learn a lot in that world , but I don ’ t know , things just kind of snowballed and grew . I take my reputation pretty seriously . So , I try and just make a good impression on everyone that I work with and meet . And that just leads to a call back , and then you get offered something over here and then , I don ’ t know , before you know you ’ re just doing the thing .
[ WM ] Yes . Character is really important for a working musician . In mainstream they respect it and especially in the worship circles . Next it sounds like you started to go to The Belonging Co . when it first started taking off . Tell us about that ?
[ Cory ] Yes , we went to The Belonging Co . immediately when we moved . That was the only church that I knew about in Nashville . One of those few friends that I had was a lady named Mia Fields . And Mia had come and taught some songwriting courses at the school in Florida when I was down there . So I just kind of stayed in touch with her a little bit . And I mean , she basically started The Belonging with Henry and Alex . So it was on my radar . We moved and the first week we got to Nashville they were meeting on Tuesday nights at Rocketown then and we went there .
