CROSSING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE , OR DO I REALLY MISS THE SMELL OF INK ?
Welcome to the June 2023 issue ! In addition to two remarkable musician stories — Anne Wilson and Cory Pierce — this June issue will highlight notable quotes from worship leaders and artists from our second decade of publishing [ WM ] Worship Musician magazine .
In the May 2023 issue , we covered the first 10 years , and back then we were strictly a printed publication . Magazine production was entirely different during the pre-digital era . That meant getting 4-color artwork film mailed to us from our advertisers . It meant a close working relationship with our printer ( we had a great one for all those years ; thank you , Jim Vitzthum and family !). I would drive to the printer and proof the final copy before the printing presses rolled . And back in those days , my printer taught me this phrase when finding a typo after the magazine was printed : “ It ’ s all over but the crying .” Ha ! There was nothing you could do once the ink hit the paper .
Back then , the magazines would be placed in envelopes , our subscribers address labels applied , and then the boxes of magazines ( which were not lightweight , I might add ) were shipped to the U . S . Post Office ’ s bulk rate department .
So many aspects of the printed magazine have changed with the advent of digital publishing . It has been a good while now since we stopped printing hard copies , but I must confess , I still miss flipping through the pages while I hold a magazine in my hand . I also miss the smell of ink . Yes , a fresh magazine off the presses had a nice smell to it . iPads are cool , but they do not smell . Ha !
The benefits of being all digital are plenty . We can fix typos after it ’ s published ( yes , we still have them ). We can upload files electronically . Plus , we can link you directly to an artist ’ s video , an advertiser ’ s product , or even other issues of
our magazine with ease . And the biggest benefit of “ going all-digital ” is that we can distribute [ WM ] Worship Musician all around the Englishspeaking world for free to our readers . A good resource — still held ( with an electronic device ) in your hand , or now on your laptop or desktop computer — right there in front of you — good practical advice to help you and your worship team be # BetterBySunday .
So , delve right into this June issue as we continue to celebrate our 20th year of publishing [ WM ] Worship Musician magazine — just don ’ t try and smell your iPad !
Lord Bless Ya !
