sound in a small club is vastly different than good sound at an outdoor festival . Either the loudspeaker must be made specifically for one application or be adept enough to adapt to varying environments .
All loudspeaker design is a series of intelligent compromises . For example , if sensitivity is increased to allow high output with less amplification , power handling will suffer . If power handling is increased , sensitivity is lowered . As with any complex technology , there are constant trade-offs among a constellation of desirable parameters , with an improvement in one area causing a detriment in another . How well the compromises are considered and executed determine the viability of the product .
Until now , the issue has been a speaker properly designed for one setting is often used outside its intended application , with poor sound the unintended result . The manufacturer must then either build a general-purpose box , which is a jack-of-all-trades or attempt to build enough variants of a given model to be viable in a number of scenarios . EAW has , instead , created a third path : use enough focused technology to allow the cabinet to be varied in real-time ; not through destructive interference , but through additive processing . Current column array technology uses comb filtering to deduct certain aspects of the wave and bend it toward a target . AC6 , on the other hand , possesses enough power to harness the more precise additive route , yielding a much broader scope to the “ steering ” application . The difference is akin to that between an analog processor and a digital processor . The analog takes away and filters the origin until something generally desirable results , while digital creates the precisely desired result from scratch , with details analog is incapable of achieving .
In use , AC6 demonstrates how all that power is used to deliver amazing sonic quality . John Mills from EAW was gracious enough to bring an AC6 out and set it up . He then proceeded to show how AC6 is able to direct sound exactly where it is needed with no artifacts or spurious anomalies present . In a word , AC6 excels . It is articulate , well-defined , smooth , robust and accurate in its propagation . With enough output to satisfy almost any application , AC6 redefines what a column can achieve . Add in multiple power supplies , a truly astounding selfhealing mode , an IP54 rating for use outdoors , a cool IR sensor that detects siblings and the always impressive Resolution™ 2 operating software , and there is little to argue against an immediate purchase of as many AC6 as the bank account will allow .
For anyone wondering , EAW is back and back in a big way .
