AUDITION CRUSHING : PART TWO | Mark Shelton
Hours of research , transcription , study , practice , and memorization . It ’ s in your brain . It ’ s in your hands . You ’ re ready to move from the preparation phase to playing the audition . Whether it ’ s by audio recording , video , or in person , there is that moment of truth when you submit your work for evaluation . It ’ s time to crush it .
THE RECORDED AUDITION
Although producing an audio or video submission might involve a technology hassle , a recording allows you the luxury of multiple takes , as opposed to the one-andonly moment of a real-time audition . Create a favorable impression from the start by producing high-quality audio and video . If you record with your smartphone , consider using an external microphone and take care that your background is uncluttered and well-lighted . If you have to scrimp on anything , remember that people will tolerate lower-quality video over poor audio .
THE LIVE AUDITION
You Might Have To Talk In addition to measuring your musical skills , some auditions include an interview segment . People want to get a clue if you will be cooperative or a constant complainer . If the position involves the music ministry , they might inquire about your background as a believer . Don ’ t be blindsided when questions are asked . Anticipate the possible questions and be ready with thoughtful answers .
Where ’ s The Djembe ? Lugging around gear just comes with the title of percussionist . If your audition sheet indicates that all the instruments will be provided , it can be tempting to just show up with your stick bag . Things happen , gear gets moved , and your hours of preparation can be undermined if the instruments are significantly different from yours or not present at the audition site . With the exception of large instruments such as timpani and chimes , consider bringing your instruments so you will be confident and comfortable .
Before You Leave For The Audition :
• Warm Up . You cannot always count on finding a suitable place or sufficient time at the audition site .
• Run Thru . Try to play all the audition material at least once on the day of the audition . If you are unable to access instruments due to travel constraints , proceed with a mental run-thru and listen to recordings .
• Check Your Gear . Don ’ t be the guy who has to borrow xylophone mallets from another candidate .
The Early Bird Is Relaxed Why add stress by cutting it close with your arrival time ? Being late sends a message that you have a punctuality challenge . Arrive at the audition site with plenty of time to set up your gear and let your blood pressure normalize .
Random Tips
• If multiple candidates are auditioning for the same spot , try to avoid being first on the audition schedule .
• Eat healthy food the day before and the day of the audition , but do not overeat right before you play . Stay hydrated .
• There is a significant amount of information supporting consuming one or two bananas to calm yourself before a stressful event .
• Make sure your clothes are within the dress code of the group for which you are auditioning . Your appearance is talking before you open your mouth . Leave your hat in the car .
The Actual Moment Present yourself as relaxed , confident , and happy . Stay focused on the music . If you have adequately prepared , you should be able to maintain your concentration even if there are slight errors in your playing . Never allow your face or body language to call attention to mistakes or signal disappointment . Be mindful that subtle details and click accuracy can be the determinants . When you conclude the final selection , maintain a confident countenance and wait to be dismissed or receive further instructions .
After the audition , try to move your gear out quickly and make a graceful exit . If the evaluator ( s ) are accessible , thank them for the opportunity . Leave immediately and buy yourself a milkshake .
If there is a period of time before the results of the audition are announced , consider sending a thank-you note . Simply express your appreciation for the opportunity to audition and you look forward to the possibility of working with the group . This indicates you are interested in the position . I strongly recommend a handwritten note delivered by snail mail rather than texting or email . You ’ ll make an impression .
It ’ s worth noting that a well-prepared musician can triumph over someone with greater talent who fails to prepare . Also , keep in mind that the perception of a good-natured and humble attitude can be among the deciding factors .
Crush that audition !
