ANOTHER TOP 10 FOR YOUR DRUMMING ADVENTURE | Carl Albrecht
I still have tons of ambition and desire to see what God has next for me on the horizon . I hope you do too ! The desire to grow , learn , and to do well should always be stirring in your heart . That ’ s why I ’ ve been searching the Internet for new drum ideas .
So what am I looking for on the web ? … new ideas ! … sounds ! … fresh drum and percussion concepts ! … new tech ! Something to help me grow . For worship drummers , probably the biggest challenge is to find time to keep growing in your talent . Most of you are not doing music full time and you feel overwhelmed with just trying to learn songs for next Sunday . But I challenge you to keep reaching for higher levels of what the Lord has called you to , and gifted you for ! Don ’ t be discouraged by what you can ’ t do . Build upon what you ’ ve got . Be faithful !
Here are my top 10 ideas for maintaining musical growth .
1 . Play everyday ! At least 30 minutes to an hour . If you don ’ t have a structured routine , at least work on a bunch of songs of various styles . (* Practice routines can be found in my previous articles and on the web .)
2 . Work with a metronome ! ALWAYS ! When doing rudiments , groove exercises , and even drum solos get use to playing everything to a click .
3 . Cruise the web , check out YouTube , etc . for drum ideas , on line lessons and learn something new .
4 . Call for a band jam . Talk to your worship leader or bandleader about a monthly night of worship where you just play through a bunch of songs worshipping God together . Or it could just be an extended “ band time ” after your regular rehearsal . Be creative ! Maybe just get with the bass player and work on grooves together . Just do something other than playing by yourself .
5 . Take LIVE lessons and go to drum clinics . ( Not just on-line stuff .) At any age or skill level you can always find a teacher to push you to the next level . If you don ’ t relate well with one , move on to another teacher . Clinics are great single events for inspiration too ! Just DO IT !
6 . Buy a drum DVD ( if you still do that ) or do a class on line . ( Don ’ t let this replace live lessons .) There are so many good teaching videos it ’ s hard to choose a favorite . Pray when shopping … NO KIDDING . Ask the Lord when you ’ re looking and He will help you . Yes , it ’ s good to research the information too ; ask others ; read reviews … but the Lord does help in your learning process .
