“ That was great , but we just need to catch this on the microphone , and I was like , “ Of course ”. So , we did that and then that same week , I got asked to lead worship at one of our other youth campuses and that had never happened before and on the Saturday night , I was asked to start co-leading within big church . That had never happened before . So , I kind of felt like God was saying this is the direction I want you to go in even though I didn ’ t even know ministry was particularly with music , and this is something you could do as a job . I knew that I would always serve in church , but they didn ’ t know that I was going to be working on staff at church .
And I had a friend , one of my youth leaders , who was just challenging me . She said , “ Have you thought about ministry ”? Again , it was the kindness of God . This is a couple of months later and she had no idea about the United thing or anything , and I hadn ’ t told anyone because I didn ’ t want to be that person that turns out that I was there telling everyone I ’ m going to be on the latest United thing and allof-a-sudden , the song got cut . I didn ’ t want to do that and so she just said , “ Don ’ t box God . Just because it looks like this for somebody else , it doesn ’ t mean it has to look like that for you ”. So , I kind of took that on . Fast forward to February of 2013 and I had the best retail lunch of my life . Our global creative class wanted to have lunch with me and that should have been a telltale sign that I just had no idea .
And I was like that ’ s so nice that she would do that , and so we started chatting and she said would you ever quit your job ? And I said , “ Well , I work in retail so yeah .” And she said , “ Would you quit it today though ?” And I said , “ Yes , why ?” And she said , “ Because we ’ d love you to come on staff to look after the vocals at the city campus and you have to quit today because you ’ re going to be in South Africa next week with the United boys for the Zion tour .”
[ WM ] Wow !
[ Taya ] Yeah , and so then I started crying a little bit and then also trying to tell her I didn ’ t go to university . I haven ’ t had singing lessons . It ’ s kind of like I was giving it every chance to say are you sure about this ? But I walked back into work , and said , I ’ ve got something to tell you . And it ’ s just like they knew because they knew that at every chance that I had whenever I wasn ’ t at work , I was at youth or I was doing something and they said , “ You ’ re going to go work for the church , aren ’ t you ?” And I was like , “ How do you guys know that ? I didn ’ t know that . That is what I ’ m doing .” They were so kind and supportive , and I guess in that moment I realized oh , the song must have made it on the record , which is so kind and so … no , it was a complete surprise what that song did . It shocked me .
