opinions , feelings about what was happening in society . I don ’ t think that we ’ re all called to do that . I think people who are well thought out and studied and versed in certain subjects in arenas in society should be the ones who are talking about the issues , and those who have not done their due diligence need to sit back and listen .
But I think the greater critique there is on music as a whole , not just Christian music or faithoriented music . But if I look at the top 50 songs in the world right now , what are we talking about ? With all of the issues that exist in the world , all of the aches and groans that we deal with from humanity on a daily basis and what are we talking about ? I just feel like there has to be a restoration of conviction within the heart of the artist , the songwriter , and the producer . And I feel like music is the greatest vehicle to communicate . So some music is to be an escape . It ’ s to take our mind off of the weight and the heavy things of the world , and there ’ s a space for that , and I understand that , but when it dominates what is popular , I think we ’ re out of balance . And what I hope to bring in my music is the heart and soul of a real person , and that ’ s why themes on this album talk about friendship and empathy and corruption and leadership and forgiveness and hope . I want to bring the breadth and the depth of the human experience into my artistry , and I hope that it inspires other artists to do the same .
“ Come Home ” is a very special song to me because it ’ s interesting . The first question that I got back from the label when I turned it in was , and this ... I turned that song in probably a year and a half ago . It was one of the first songs that I wrote for the next album . So , this was before a lot of things in the church world broke on a global scale , but things have been piling up for centuries because so many terrible things have been done in the name of God . And even within the Christian space , there have been sects of the Christian faith who have abused power and platform to create more division rather than more unity and have greatly politicized the Gospel . And I think it ’ s important that as believers , we own our shortcomings . And I think that it ’ s important for those who have been wounded by the church to express

The first question the label asked me was , “ Is this a deconstructionist song ?” And at the time , I wasn ’ t really familiar with what that meant . Now , I understand that it is a layered term , that some people use the word deconstruction to say , “ I ’ m separating what I read in Scripture from what culture and religion and tradition has layered over it .” Some people use the term deconstruction as , “ I ’ m detaching cultural nuance from timeless Scripture to see how it applies personally to my life .” And then other
