that sits in the middle . Here at BOTTEGA we like to enhance more than we do replace . Purely by thinking of drum triggers and sample replacement from a different perspective , it opens up a world of opportunity for them .
Now there are two implementations of using drum triggers / sample replacement , the first is in the live environment , and the second is in the studio . We ’ ve talked a lot about using a Roland SPD-SX live to play drum samples from , but another way we use it is to trigger our kick and snare . The sounds we use to enhance those acoustic sounds live are electronic samples to add a layer of texture to our already great sounding acoustic drums . Through using different sounds for each song , it enables us to provide different moods per song . We can get into specifics later but pretty much what that means is when you hit the snare / kick it triggers a sound to play out of the Roland SPD- SX .
Amongst Bottega , we very rarely trigger acoustic samples in this way , but we do understand that a lot of people , and churches , use sample replacement / enhancement through their DAWS using acoustic samples that are premixed to sit well in a mix . This is often used in a broadcast scenario .
Take for example our Simon Kobler Studio Series , this pack would be perfect for that situation where you were looking for a great pre-mixed snare sound to substitute or enhance the sound that you were going for on a Sunday morning . This pack could also be used for the same type of sample replacement for studio recordings . Sometimes when you ’ ve recorded something you are looking for a sample to enhance that recording . That could be the attack from a kick or the crack needed out of a snare , and for some reason , you are unable to obtain that in your recording . A quick solution is to grab one of our premix samples to layer or replace .
There is a fair amount of software or different DAWS that you can use for this , but a very common one is Steven Slate Trigger , especially in the live environment . What we do is create MIDI files that exactly replicate the rhythm and dynamics of what the kick and snare are doing , and then put those MIDI files into trigger a sampler , like Native Instrument ’ s Battery . We then blend those sounds to taste in the mix . We find this to be much more accurate and allows flexibility and manipulation of the samples to blend more accurately into the drums , and the overall mix . There are many ways in which people do this . This is just one .
We hope this is a good introduction to how you can be using sample packs like the Simon Kobler Studio Series . We could go on for hours and delve even deeper into this world , but for now , enjoy exploring these possibilities .
WILL DRUM SAMPLES REPLACE DRUMMERS ? - LUKE ANDERSON OF ELEVATION WORSHIP
Talking about drum samples as a drummer is kind of a funny thing . Especially thinking about myself as a 16-year-old self being introduced to drum samples . Part of me didn ’ t like that concept because I felt like if I liked them , I liked something that could potentially replace me as a drummer . But I remember the moment when I started making the mental shift around what actually drum samples did .
The first time I really fell in love with samples , like legit loved the drum samples and loved the song , was listening to Kid A by Radiohead .
