Lindsay Sweat and John Guerra , who are both my two main songwriters and collaborators for this record . We were all a little bit tired , and Lindsay reached out and she just said across the table , “ Hey , do you have any voice memos you ’ d be willing to share that we could work from .” Because working over Zoom , I got to know both of them quite well and again , I ’ m not necessarily the one that ’ s putting out my hand for things , so I was feeling comfortable and I handed this voice memo like , “ Yeah , I ’ ve got a little one .” I ’ m always like , “ If there ’ s something better or if we don ’ t want to use it , let ’ s not do that ”.
Those chords and the soulful little touch kind of came from that and I love this one because when we listen back to it , it ’ s like a three minute 40 seconds type little song , which I don ’ t even know how to write a single and yet we were just giving this little one , like you said from the perspective of God writing . Matthew 11 : 28-30 and it ’ s essentially because God , it says that Jesus says he ’ s not going to place anything illfitting or heavy on us , but He says come with me , which is the most beautiful invitation that ’ s there . The hardest thing for some reason for us as humans is to come . It ’ s like we like to do everything else about calm , we like to strive .
We like to try and figure things out and yet He is just there saying , “ Come to me all you who are weary , and I will give you rest .” He says , “ Watch me ”, in The Message translation paraphrase , it says , “ Watch me , work with me , watch how I do this .” Which is so kind , because we have a God that doesn ’ t just gives us this amazing breath of life in our lungs and knits us together in our mothers ’ wombs and then says , “ Great , here you go , have a good shot at life and then I ’ ll see you at the end and I ’ ll give you a grade whether you made it or you didn ’ t .” But we have a God that works like Jesus lived the most perfect life , laid it out . We have it word for word of how we ’ re meant to do this life and he did it brilliantly .
And yet for some reason , it ’ s the hardest thing for us to just come and humble ourselves . I wasn ’ t trying to write it from God ’ s perspective , and to be honest , it felt like the best thing to sing over people and to remind people about the grace of God , the unmerited favor that there ’ s grace upon grace . There ’ s no sinner in the Bible that ’ s too far gone and so it ’ s hopefully comforting and hopefully a reminder for people . If it ’ s any consolation after we wrote it , we recorded it and we actually used the demo vocal because it just felt the most honest and I didn ’ t even try and re-sing it or top it because there ’ s something that was captured in that moment .
And we all kind of took a sigh of relief and my friend , who we were writing it with , just said , “ I think I needed that more than I realized .” And I think it ’ s the honesty of so many times we think God , yes , He ’ s holy and He is beautiful ! We need to come with reverence , but there ’ s also the person of Jesus . We have a triune God … Holy Spirit , God and Jesus who in the message translation says , “ He became flesh and he moved among us in the neighborhood . He lived
