Every time we sit down with Crowder it is an adventure in discovery and laughter . It is usually just after he has released a new project where the message and the music are both genius and inspiring at the same time . Who else can get away with blending so many musical genres into one masterpiece ? This new Milk & Honey album checks off both of those boxes ( yes , he has done it again ), but this time we get an inside look at his new home studio and part of the songwriting process itself .
[ WM ] Let ' s talk about the song “ Good God Almighty ”. I have several questions , but first of all , congrats on over two million YouTube views already . Man !
[ Crowder ] That ' s awesome . song came about ?
[ Crowder ] Man , I walked in with that thing . I think my best strength as a songwriter , especially the more I ' ve gotten to write with super amazing lyricists … I realized I ' ve got good ideas . Then they ' re like , " That ' s a terrible line Crowder " and then they write it really great . That ' s typically my experience in writing sessions , " That ' s a good idea Crowder ," ( laughing ) I walked in with that one . I ' m like , “ This is going to be … let ' s twist it .”
I grew up on Country and Western music . If you ' re growing up in Texarkana , Texas , it ' s just what we call the ‘ air .’ Country ' s my jam , man . But there ' s always like a twist .
So , I think a lot of times in my song writing , I like to have a ‘ turn of phrase ’ and this seemed like one of those perfect opportunities to take a phrase that you typically don ' t hear used . That ' s true . I mean , you ' re saying out loud , a truthful thing … like God is all-mighty . And that ' s that . And He ' s good . It ' s pretty simple , straightforward . And soon as I threw that out there , the stuff that was most of the songs on this whole album really happened quickly . There weren ' t a lot we had to fight with , but as soon as I threw that out there , we started rolling and it did turn into a ruckus time very quickly .
[ WM ] This song just seems to me like it was born out of a spontaneous musical moment . Tell us how the hooky chorus and the overall
Good God Almighty
[ WM ] Wow . I like to think of it sung in James Brown voice , " Good God Almighty !"
