But I believe we must find ways to push through regardless . If we are disciples of Christ - part of His body , The Church - we need the input of others , even if we sometimes don ’ t like it . It ’ s amazing and wonderful to me that a band - a team of worshiping musicians and technicians - can provide such an amazing platform for meaningful steps along the journey of discipleship .
Our abilities are not - and should not be seen as - our “ baby ”. Instead , we ought to see the ability we have as being a thing - a gift that is separate from who we are . This gift , our ability to sing , play or tech , is our contribution towards the team ’ s goal . By being a member of the team , part of the roster , we must understand that we are giving our gift , our ability … sacrificially to our church community and , in a very real sense , to God . We ought to recognize that we are making a small contribution towards an objective that is WAY bigger than any one person ’ s vocal , instrumental or technical ability .
So , instead it being like a collection of overprotective parents shielding our babies , what if our team was more like this at rehearsal :
We ’ re a group of passionate off-road truck enthusiasts , gathered in a workshop to build a great ride - our set of songs for the Sunday service . Tonight , we ’ ll assemble our truck and take it for a bit of a test drive .
realize that some parts need to be switched out (“ No , not those tires . These will work much better !”) some need modification (“ The engine ’ s running rough . Let ’ s tune that carburetor ”) and some are not required at all (“ Let ’ s lose the fluffy dice from the rearview mirror . They ’ re just a distraction ”).
Our truck won ’ t be perfect . We don ’ t expect perfection . But it will be the best that we could possibly build with what we have .
On Sunday morning , we ’ re gonna ride this bad boy to the mountain top . And that mountain top is to deliver our congregation to a deeper connection with God and each other through a set of songs . To invite them to worship Almighty God by singing prayers , praises , and declarations of God ’ s truth together . The joy of the journey to get there in the best truck we could build ensures that I quickly forget that favorite bumper that I left back at the garage .
